With the eyes of the world on London this summer Jane Egginton takes a look at some of the city’s ultimate experiences.

London is one of those cities that everyone wants to visit – not just once in a lifetime but again and again. With the Diamond Jubilee and Olympic and Paralympic Games on the capital’s calendar for 2012, London is very much in the spotlight this season. If you only have time for a short visit it makes sense to focus on the city’s most iconic sights and its very finest offerings in terms of dining and entertaining. What follows is very much a personal, hand-picked selection but one that very deliberately will appeal to all ages.

I always recommend that any trip to London should begin at the River Thames. This is London at its best and I still get a thrill standing on one of its many ancient bridges and admiring the cityscape stretched out before me. For a bird’s eye view, though, jump on the London Eye, the capital’s very own big wheel and the largest of its kind in the world. Sit in one of the space age see-through pods atop the 135m-tall structure and watch the city – quite literally – revolve around you on your 30-minute ‘trip’ and drink in the spectacular view, which offers the perfect introduction to the city.

257-worldspa-magazine-nelson-tower-trafalgar-sq257-worldspa-magazine-oxford-circus257-worldspa-magazine-regent-street

Jump off the ‘Eye’ and aboard one of the many vessels that ply the historic waterway that is the Thames. Although you could choose a lunchtime cruises or a luxury tour, I suggest a simple, unadulterated boat trip. The London Eye does a 40-minute sightseeing cruise along the river Thames, with specialist guides providing commentary for key sights. One of my favourite options, though, is the fun London Duck Tours, on funky yellow amphibious boats. I have only just learnt that these unique vessels are part of British history as they were used to take troops ashore for the D-Day landings.

Quintessential London

If you wanted to make a day of it, you could carry on all the way to Richmond. In which case, don’t miss the superlative Bingham, right on the river, with delicious food and charming service. You may find yourself enjoying it so much that you want to stay the night in one of the desirable rooms. Otherwise, for a classic British lunch, dinner or just cocktails, I suggest a visit to the newly refurbished Boyd’s just off Trafalgar Square. By the way, The Wolseley is a wonderful London institution in the grand European style, where there is never a bad time to eat.

No one will want to miss a visit to the London Sealife Aquarium, with its thousands of creatures in over two million liters of water and new Explore Shark Reef Encounter. I have been here several occasions with my family and we never seem to tire of the touch pools – which each time bring a new surprise – the exciting diving displays and the fascinating interactive feeding. You can even go behind the scenes on special tours here.

Quintessential London

A day out in London wouldn’t be complete without that quintessential British Experience: afternoon tea. One of my favourites is on offer at the divine Brown’s Hotel, reputedly the oldest hotel in London. Here, you can enjoy five-starkluxury in Mayfair away from the usual tourist crowds. Brown’s deserves an extra mention for its attention to smaller guests and its inspired Five-Star Kids programme. Little visitors get a number of gifts, which could be a personalised copy of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, which was written in one of the hotel’s suites. Other offerings include junior bath time accessories, their own teddy bear and a bespoke room service menu which includes cookies and milk. Over 13s are not left out and little ones even get their own spa treatments fr/m twinkle toes to Teen Facial Glow. It is all too cute for words.

257-worldspa-magazine-st-pauls-cathedral257-worldspa-magazine-tower-bridge257-worldspa-magazine-victoria-memorial257-worldspa-magazine-london03

Dukes Hotel is another magnificent London spot where, on top of afternoon tea, you can enjoy a classic martini or have dinner in the acclaimed restaurant, THIRTY SIX. It is even possible to partake in a traditional afternoon tea designed just for children at The Montcalm: ‘Teddy’s Tea Time’ here includes a complimentary Montcalm teddy bear to take home.

Quintessential London

A trip to London wouldn’t be complete without a royal visit. There are many palaces to choose from but if I had to pick just one regal experience, it would be the Tower of London. The Crown Jewels will of course dazzle you, and the magnificent ravens are a sight to behold, but unexpected sights include the White Tower, one of the most important historic buildings in the world, which currently houses ‘Power House’, a fascinating exhibition about the national institutions created at the Tower of London.

In fact, it is worth bearing in mind that many of London’s hotels offer much more than just a place to stay. I visit the Corinthia, just moments from Downing Street for its old school elegance and the capital’s largest spa. The Langham has been offering its sublime service to international visitors and locals alike, whether its in its spa, restaurant or opulent cocktail bar. The Victorian townhouse and gentlemen’s club that is St James Hotel and Club is the kind of place you could stay all day, for spa treatments, eating experiences and general pampering.

Quintessential London

Grosvenor House is a real quintessential London hotel. Found on one of the city’s most prestigious streets, it has a high class, historic pedigree that reaches back 350 years. Le Méridien Piccadilly is of a similar ilk. This landmark offering represents culture, art and fashion in the heartbeat of London: Piccadilly Circus. What was one of the most fashionable areas of the city after the Restoration, Piccadily today is still one of London’s most desirable locales, where killer cocktails at Longitude 0°8 are once tried, never forgotten.

Highly regarded new kids on the block have heralded a new era for London’s luxury hotels – a move hardly thought possible a few years ago. Hilton is a highly contemporary offering that also offers a superb location that gives really good access to many of the city’s most popular attractions. From here it’s a short walk to the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral – or Tower of London of course. Its spectacular rooftop Skylounge overlooking The Tower of London and Tower Bridge could have been transplanted from Manhattan and gives what I would say are the best views of any London bar.

With any luck you might, like me, feel like an excited and school kid on arrival at the Hogwartian St Pancras Renaissance Hotel for the first time, where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed here and the location certainly worked some kind of magic on me even before I visited the sublime subterranean spa. The Booking Office bar and restaurant located in the original ticket office is the place to go for a classic British Gin Fizz. And should you have one too many at the atmospheric bar, you could always stay the night.

London wouldn’t be London without a show. There are plenty of old favorites to choose from such as The Mousetrap, Mamma Mia and the more recent War Horse to choose from. Consider too the latest London musical to be showered with crit)cal acclaim: Matilda (certainly not just for children). Here I can give you a bit of insider information about getting tickets for the city’s much loved shows.

Quintessential London

Get Into London Theatre offers the opportunity to get into a top London show between 21st June and 9th September from just £10. Andkthroughout August Kids Week is offering anyone under 16 the chance to go free (when accompanied by a paying adult) to popular shows such as The Wizard of Oz, Shrek the Musical, and The Tiger Who Came to Tea.

Everybody knows that London probably does pop-ups better than any other city and this summer sees a bumper crop. London’s Pleasure Gardens draws on the city’s rich tradition of creating communal space where people from every walk of life in the 17th and 19th centuries could meet and enjoy music and cultural events, as well as walking, drinking and flirting. Mozart, Hogwarth and Dickens were all fans. This summer this quintessential British experience will be recreated in a pop up playground for all to enjoy.

257-worldspa-magazine-london02257-worldspa-magazine-london-theater257-worldspa-magazine-london01257-worldspa-magazine-river-thames

Also popping up will be the one thing that London is really missing: a beach. A great swathe of sand will appear in the form of The Beach London, which will be the largest man made Beach in Europe and a first for London. Other lucky host cities, such as New York, Paris and Berlin have been lucky enough to see pop up beaches. Now (from June this year) Londoners can take it easy by the Thames, relaxing with sand between their toes, a drink in their hand and a view of the capital’s spectacular skyline. minilogo

The Healing Power of Ancient Greece

Aristotle, the much loved and frequently quoted Greek son said: ‘The energy of the mind is the essence of life’. With that in mind, Jane Egginton set off on an Odyssean quest to find some much needed Greek style healing.

With the modern world in economic crisis, and Greece suffering more than most, there is a particularly pressing need for us all to draw on our inner resources. The rich history of Greece is well known, but now it’s valuable healing traditions are being rediscovered.

world spa ancient healing greeceGreece has the heads-up when it comes to wellbeing. The country has one of the best climates in the world, a wonderful variety of natural assets and perhaps the healthiest diet on the planet, with UNESCO declaring its cuisine an intangible world treasure in 2010.

In ancient Greece, yoga was known as self-knowledge, with its spiritual approach matching that in the east. Those seeking healing to cure their current ills are now looking to Greece for a range of approaches that draw on the ancient practices of thalassotherapy (thalassa is sea in Greek), yoga and the use of natural therapies.

At Ekies All Senses in Halkidiki, Northern Greece, the modern Greek fusion menu is just one example of the hotel’s balanced approach. I love the fact that you can have ‘lunch’ at any time of day, and even anywhere in the hotel. The reasonably priced organic offerings (salads and appetisers hover around €9, with mains priced at a very reasonable €10 to €12) included delights such as watermelon and feta cheese and tabouleh salad and prawn with Arabian bread.

The name of Ekies All Senses, a special boutique hotel comes from Kambanelis, a well known Greek author who famously – in Greece at least – said: ‘In life you have five senses. In your dreams you have a hundred. Freedom knows no boundaries.’

world spa ancient healing greeceIt is a concept you might come close to feeling after a blissful massage at Ekies’ spa. It features the delicious natural Greek Apivita products (which also grace all the hotel bathrooms) and an innovative range of treatments, many of which draw on Mediterranean traditions. A ‘basic elements of nature’ treatment involves a series of revitalising herbal inhalations followed by a sublime facial massage. Therapists explain that they try to take their visitors back to ancient Greece and the teachings of Hippocrates, who identified the need for balance within the four elements of nature (air, water, fire or earth).

Authentic experiences for every season are on the menu at Costa Navarino, generally agreed to be one of the better resorts in Greece. The luxury complex is located in Messinia in the southwest Peloponnese, which has an extraordinary rich cultural heritage spanning 4,500 years and untouched mountain and seascapes. The wealth of treatments on offer at the Anazoe Spa and thalassotherapy centre include unique oleotherapy (olive oil) treaments based on ancient Greek practice discovered at the nearby palace of Nestor.

Billed as an Agean dream, Karma Pelikanos on the island of Mykonos provides a very 21st century take on holistic health in Greece. Guests are treated to oxygen infusion facials apparently favoured by the likes of Madonna and Justin Timberlake and the ultimate in treatments at the aptly named Karma Spa. The lofty, but achievable aim is to raise the bar in terms of every visitors’ well being.

world spa ancient healing greeceThere is an undeniable gloss on things here, which is not at odds with the holistic outlook. A highly select team of therapists includes traditional healers (massage therapists, facialists, etc) as well as those who specialise in Chinese medicine, including acupuncturists and even more exotic Balinese rituals and ceremonies. Guests can sign up for a range of activities from gentle Tai Chi at sunrise to more invigorating power walks on the spectacular beach.

In Greek mythology, Mykonos was the location for the momentous battle between Zeus and the fearless titans. Today the island is known as being a favoured destination for celebrities and the wealthy, but on a holiday at Karma Resorts you will feel connected with its history. Its luxury residence showcases the best of traditional Greek architecture, with soothing white walls and shutters the colour of the Aegean sea.

The extraordinary villa of Karma Pelikanos has a 180-degree view across the clear calm waters of the Aegean. The interior is highly designed to international standards, with the treatments truly holistic, using certified organic products and renowned local and healers from around the world. Prices though make this strictly for the heavy weights – a six bedroom villa rings in at €28,000 during peak season.

Health Matters 360 in the UK chose Corfu in Greece as the only overseas location for one of its unique health hubs. Offering a wellbeing break that is genuinely holistic, this company is breaking the mould by providing long lasting, truly sustainable benefits to individuals’ health covering everything from nutrition and exercise to mental health.

world spa ancient healing greeceGuests report becoming fully transformed after a stay at the sublime Rou Estate in Corfu in the north-east of the lovely Ionian island. True to its 360-degree approach, all aspects of an individual’s life – physical, emotional and spiritual health are looked at. The magnificent poolside location, with sweeping views of the coast and nearby walks in the peace of the surrounding mountains soothe mind, body and soul, whilst highly trained therapists create tailor made sessions, workshops and consultations.

Every day guests are treated to yoga and relaxation sessions along with physical workouts such as power walking, stretching and full body workouts. Nutritious food using fresh local ingredients is on the menu with dishes designed by a Michelin starred chef and cooked by a local chef. The organisers are keen to stress that their breaks are neither boot camps or detox breaks but offer something far more meaningful and sustainable. Their approach certainly seem to work, with many guests reporting a positive transformation which has a long lasting effect.

Many of the insightful quotes on health originated in Greece. ‘The greatest wealth is health,’ according to Virgil, a concept that is particularly relevant in the current economic climate. ‘Man is ill because he is never still,’ is the wisdom from Paracelsus, who was Swiss but believed in the Greek concept of the four elements. ‘The part can never be well unless the whole is well,’ Plato, the greatest philosopher from Greece and perhaps of all time, tells us.

Health resorts in Greece are promoting getting back to nature, an all round positive approach and resilience – clearly key qualities to surviving not just in modern Greece but in contemporary society today. minilogo

Propelled to international fame with its Royal Wedding in October last year, Bhutan is a remote kingdom nestled in the midst of the Himalayas between Tibet and India.

Is there any place on earth where people don’t scramble in packs to lay hands on the latest version of the iPhone? Yes, there is. The name is Bhutan.

Bhutan The Heavens Keep It Well Hidden

Propelled to international fame with its Royal Wedding in October last year, Bhutan is a remote kingdom nestled in the midst of the Himalayas between Tibet and India. With only one official television station, a commendable no smoking law in public places and absolutely zero traffic lights on the roads – this is a pristine enclave for all of us weary urbanites.

world_spa_bhutan_07

It is precisely because Bhutan doesn’t come with the trappings of modernity and popular culture that makes this gem the size of Iowa; attractive. In its stunning simplicity, this little world of wonder shuts out all the city noise and presents a serene platter of heritage that is as authentic as the ema datshi (chilli in cheese sauce eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner in Bhutan).

Spiritually Divine To experience Vajrayana Buddhism is to experience Bhutan first-hand. With a population close to 700,000, seventy percent of the people are Buddhists. Vajrayana Buddhism is a spiritual practice known to be one of the most profound schools of teaching in the Buddhist world and was introduced to Bhutan in the eighth century by the sage Guru Rinpoche. A must visit is the Taktsang Monastery or Tiger Nest Monastery located in Paro, popularly known as the valley of temples and monasteries. Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche who is lauded as the Second Buddha, arrived at the Taktsang Monastery on a tiger’s back all the way from Tibet. The Bhutanese also believe it was the dakinis or celestial beings that carried materials for the construction of this monastery perched on a picturesque cliff 900 meters above the valley. The best way to get to the spectacular monastery carved in solid rock is a leisurely hike up the mountain flanked by locals paying their pilgrimage. Colourful prayer flags adorn this scenic uphill climb.

world_spa_bhutan_11Another interesting monastery is the Chimi Lhakhang, built after the Divine Madman, Lama Drukpa Kuenlay. In fact, this saint who lived circa the 16th century is the reason why most houses in Bhutan are painted with phalluses on the outside. Folktale has it that the Divine Madman once tamed a female demon with his thunderbolt of wisdom. As strange as the story goes, this eccentric figure is well loved by barren women, who make pilgrimages to the Chimi Lhakhang praying for the seeds of fertility.

For an upclose look at stunning Bhutanese architecture, it is recommended to visit the Punakha Dzong. Dating back to the 17th century, this monastery at Phobjikha Valley is home to the rare black necked crane believed to be the embodiment of the sixth Dalai Lama. The Kira or Gho, the national dress, is required for locals to enter monasteries. Visitors should wear collared shirts with sleeves, full length pants or skirts and shoes with socks.

Exquisite Adventure Bhutan is hailed as The Last Shangri-La because of its breathtaking landscape, ranging from tropical plains to the alpine highlands. The legacy of its natural beauty puts Bhutan at the top ten in the world for trekking. For the seasoned trekker, a must is the legendary 25 Day Snowman’s Trek. This is a challenging and wild journey across Bhutan’s mountain wilderness of Lunana. The high valleys of Lunana are situated below the world’s highest unclimbed mountain, Gangkar Puensum. Some of the highlights include following yak herders trails across high passes and travels among some of the last virgin peaks of the Himalayas. Lunana Snowman Trek is said to be the hardest trek in the world, with 12 passes between 4,500 and 5,300 meters; overnight stays between 3,700 and 5,100 meters and 24 days amidst high alpine areas.

For those looking for a gentler outing, the Jomolhari Trek and Rodungla Trek are just as stirring. These routes are in the high mountains which still call for adequate endurance and the trek time often lasts for six to 10 days depending on the chosen route. Beginners should try the Druk Path, Dagala Trek and Gasa or Laya Treks. These are shorter treks with remarkable altitude differences and each trip lasts three to six days. Alternatively, the Bumthang Culture, Gangtey and Samtegang Treks take up to four days with ample routes from village to village.

The best trekking times are mid-March to mid-May and mid-September to the beginning of November. Aside from the experienced guides who are veterans with trekking adventures in Bhutan, all necessary essentials such as camping gear and food are taken care of by the local staff and cooks come in tow as well. With all basic needs met, one has time to soak up the natural beauty of Bhutan for this jewel is blessed with a spectacular range of flora and animals. The Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, red panda and even the mysterious “yeti” add to the bucolic terrain. To lend poetry to nature, rhododendrons, blue poppy and weeping cypress dot the untainted birthright of this glorious masterpiece.

Happy People The people of Bhutan, affectionately known as the Drukpas, were once rated by Business Week magazine as the happiest in Asia and the eighth happiest in the world. This is because the country places importance on Gross National Happiness. The progress of Bhutan is measured in terms of happiness primarily and does not let material needs pollute this philosophy. There is much for us to learn from these people whose carefree lifestyle is its custom and carries on to be such even in the 21st century. They are mostly farmers who are generally tall and athletic, with elongated eyes and broad cheekbones. And their perfect bronzed tan makes me envy their beauty even more. When you take a picture of them along the streets, they smile cheerfully exuding warmth that is non-existent in the city or sometimes, the elderly continue with their chores nonchalantly in their own world emanating an air that is unaffected and pure. They are in essence – mild mannered, humble and respectful. These are simple values essential to a harmonious society.

To get to know the people of Bhutan better, the most colourful time to visit them is during their celebrated festivals or as the Drukpas calls it, Tsechu. The most famous include the Punakha Dromche, Trongsa Tsechu, Trashigang Tsechu, Paro Festival and Thimphu Festival. These festivals are religious events where everything is purified and sanctified by lamas. The dancers are in a state of meditation and in the midst, transform themselves into deities to bless the onlookers. Proper behaviour is expected and respect given to the worshippers is highly regarded.

Some of the other places that capture the essence of the people of Bhutan, their culture and tradition are the Heritage Museum, National Memorial Chorten and the Centenary Farmers’ Market. The preservation of their heritage, fairytale kingdom and untainted lifestyle is akin to an Impressionist painting that is hanging peacefully in an art gallery, prized for only the most refined to behold. It is also through the Drukpas that one can understand that the happiest are content with the simplest things in life.

Absolutely nothing within Bhutan’s distinctive splendour is borrowed. Its inherent charm comes from a place that is so elegant; it knows how to touch your heart. And hence the locals say to foreigners or chillips “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footsteps.”

Cambodia seeps with rich history, spectacular architectural delights and natural beauty a cynosure to all eyes. In the recent past the place has witnessed a luxury revolution, which is a far cry from its turbulent past, like the “killing fields” of Choeung Ek. Cambodia is ready to embrace visitors from around the globe to admire the magnificence of Angkor Wat (declared by UNESCO one of the seven wonders of the world), Thom and the colonial capital Phnom Penh. Cambodia is slowly coming of age and aims at becoming every luxury traveler’s paradise.

One such example of Cambodia’s luxury paradise is the Koh Rong archipelago. Most of the islands – scattered across the sapphire waters of the Gulf of Thailand – remain undeveloped and offer deserted oases of virgin rainforests, tropical reefs and glistening white beaches. The unspoiled islands present a unique opportunity to create a truly ecologically sustainable large-scale resort community. Koh Rong, Cambodia’s largest island covers 78 square kilometers, about a third of the size of Thailand’s Koh Samui. The island remains virtually untouched with its 28 white sand beaches stretching up to 6 kilometers and crystal clear water.

World Spa Song Saa IslandWithin the Koh Rong Archipelago, two pristine islands Koh Ouen and Koh Bong lie side by side. They are locally known as Song Saa – Khmer for ‘The Sweethearts’. Live Like A Queen. The royal lady we are talking about is none other than the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray resort and spa located at the west crescent of the Palm Jumeirah, the celebrated man-made island in the shape of a palm tree. This goddess in all her grandeur once played host to the filming of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Transformed into an Indian palace and praised by actor Tom Cruise as having “a real elegance and beauty on camera”, this spectacular resort is famed for the movie’s impressive “black tie” scene. It is of the essence then that even Hollywood royalty cannot resist this sparkling marvel.

world spa jumeirah zabeelWhen you step into the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, her interior is draped with hand-painted frescoes, Turkish artworks and lavish murals that lend an air that is quite honestly out of this world. The ocean blue larger-than-life curtains reflected into a thousand images in the intricately cut mirror at the lobby entrance is a romantic prologue at the very tip of the manifold secrets that await you. In true fashion of its Stay Different brand promise, Guest Relations Executives will welcome you with their theatre-inspired uniforms offering traditional Turkish coffee and Turkish delights.

The door then opens to another realm of opulence. The 38 villas come in Four Bedrooms and Five Bedrooms making the perfect oasis for a family vacation. The Pool Villas, Beach Villas, Garden Villas and Royal Villas surround a grand lagoon pool at the same time giving you utmost privacy. The villas are perfect for a private retreat for those looking for a home away from home and a butler is always available at your beck and call. With direct access to a private beach, the Royal Residences is set in lush tropical gardens making it ideal for grand parties and private events.

For couples, one is spoilt for choice with the 405 elegant guest rooms at the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray. The one and only Grand Imperial Suite is the most glorious. It has a Turkish bath, showers, steam room and an oversized terrace with a breathtaking view of the island. Most importantly, the Imperial Floor offers an exclusive experience that is not offered to other guests. However, there are also a slew of other rooms that give the Imperial a run for its money. They range from the Superior Double and Deluxe King to the Junior Suite and Two Bedroom Suite. The rooms come with the most comfortable beds with plush cushions, flat screen television mounted on the walls designed classical style and pristine white bathrooms.

Top on the list is delectable cuisine that satisfies the palate as well. The award-winning Al Nafoorah is famed for its grilled veal fillet prepared using an authentic Lebanese method. The Ottoman Afternoon Tea at the Sultan Lounge is also delightful to set a relaxing disposition for the day. For a treat before bedtime, a visit to the Voda Bar is a must. This bar is dressed in white and bathed in cooling azure lights giving a soothing ambience that further please the senses with chill out tunes and deep house music played by the resident deejay on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

world spa jumeirah zabeelAn Imperial Touch Jumeirah Zabeel Saray is home to the Talise Ottoman Spa, one of the biggest spas in the Middle East. This spa was awarded the prestigious title of United Arab Emirates’ Leading Spa Resort 2011 by The World Travel Awards. It is reminiscent of fair maidens serenading in the olden days in a palace where your journey of wellbeing is centered on the art of ancient healing. Nestled within the heart of this palatial spa is the Talise Hammam, the most well-liked amongst guests. The Hammam or Turkish Bath is a blend of Roman tradition with Moslem requirement and the Talise Hammam is a tribute to the vast majority of hammams which were built during the Ottoman Empire. First, you don a pestemal, a cotton wrap in the warm room and savor the gentle heat from the goebektas, a low marble platform that softens your skin and relax your muscles. Next, you rinse off with water and prepare for the Hammam ritual.

world spa jumeirah sarayThe lavish hour-long Royal Ottoman cleanses your skin with a body polish that uses the kese mitt or more popularly known as an exfoliating washcloth. A foam massage using hand-made olive oil soap follows, coupled with shampooing your hair and conditioning. A facial cleansing and a cream masque soothing your body complete the ritual. The other Hammam rituals include the Traditional Turkish, refreshing Foam Massage and Turkish Scrub. At the Hammam, guests can also enjoy aromatic tea with Turkish delight, figs or dates at the lounges, majlis or outdoor pavilions. The Hammam at the Talise Ottoman Spa is designed for men only, ladies only and a couples section is available too.

world spa jumeirah zabeelAlternatively, newly weds and honeymooners can opt for the Talise Couples Spa which is the signature “spa within a spa”, an entire floor dedicated to couples. This VIP section is located on the Mezzanine floor, both romantic and exclusive. Another beautiful environment for a spa treatment is the outdoor Thai-style pavilions that are surrounded by lush gardens and float above waterways. This serene outdoor sanctuary is reserved for Thai massages. Other massages that can be conducted in the indoor treatment rooms include the Sultan’s and Aromatherapy suitable for ladies and Indian Head Massage and Sports Massage for men. The indulgent Caviar Age Defying Facial and Vitamin C Facial are highly recommended for women while the unique Gentleman’s Facial is catered specially for men.

There is an array of specially designed rooms to enhance your idyllic retreat at the spa. The Hydrotherapy Room uses an age-old tradition that is naturally healing, stimulates circulation, soothes pain and revitalizes the skin. The Snow Ice Room kept at four degrees Celsius is cooling, a contrast to the desert temperature in Dubai. There is even a Cold Jacuzzi which is used to keep the heat away. The Adventure Shower is especially popular with men with its multiple jets and an overhead rain shower that provide excellent rejuvenation. After their spa treatment, guests head to the Ixir Spa Cafe which offers a concoction of spa-friendly whole food meals, vegetarian dishes and diet friendly cuisine. The detox salad and smoothies are invigorating delicacies.

With such majestic enchantment to capture your imagination and a beautiful assortment of gifts to shower upon you at the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, it is indeed a chance to live like royalty. So the next time you are in the land where mystery and desert tales preside, check in to this luxurious palace. The grande dame might set your standards so high up; she will whip you into a true connoisseur who only stays with the very best. minilogo

Most of us brood over life, trapped in the whirlwind of daily stress, perplexity and schedules. A person constantly endeavors to seek solace from this never-ending maze. One answer for a calmer, balanced life may very well lie in meditation.

In a nutshell, the foundation of meditation lies in breathing techniques. Breathing techniques have a strong association with taking the mind away from the stress and nervousness that looms over a person. Slow, deliberate breath calms and centers onself. It also forces the body to take in more oxygen. Repetition of the breathing technique de-clutters the mind and trains it to concentrate. While meditating, a person detaches himself from the world around him and instills positive energy within. Meditation assists in guiding the mind to focus and attain clarity, while generating relaxation and a spiritual connection.

Before we get into breathing techniques and meditation techniques, it is important to understand the various forms of meditation followed by cultures across the globe. Some quarters hold meditation and the related arts with skepticism but something has to be said about its widespread presence and influence in cultures, history and people spread across time and geographical boundaries. World Travel Magazine lays the trail and explores the world of meditation in simple and common terms, to demystify the simple, so to speak.

People, in general, associate meditation with Buddhism or with other forms of mysticism. The image of a person eyes closed, deep in thought and legs crossed pops up into the minds of many when a topic on meditation is discussed.

It will naturally come as a surprise when one realizes that this image is just one form of meditation. It can be argued that variations to a simple theme, as we will learn, do not constitute as meditation. Rather these variations should be classified as yoga, exercise or body stretching, the list is endless. Either way, the result of all these variations to a theme have the same end result – a calm and balanced mind.

Meditation takes different forms in various cultures such as Bodhi dharma, Hinduism, Baha’i faith, Buddhism, Christian meditation, Islam meditation, Jainism, Judaism, Sikhism and Taoism. Various scriptures corroborate the practice of meditation during antiquity in India and China where meditation takes the form of Taoism, Chi Kung and Wuji Gigong. In Japan, meditation evolved into Zen. Each of these cultures has its own variations, interpretation and purpose of meditation and this in turn gives rise to diverse permutations of practices.

Meditation is at the heart of the Buddhist way of life, it helps one attain a higher level of consciousness. In Buddhism, through meditation, the first step is to learn to identify the negative mental state known as ‘delusion’ and develop a peaceful and positive mental state or ‘virtuous mind’. ‘Delusions’ are overcome by becoming familiar with the ‘virtuous mind’. As we progress, we maintain the virtuous minds and use our wisdom to solve the problems of daily life. As our mind becomes more positive, our actions become more constructive and our experience of life becomes more satisfying and beneficial to others.

In Christianity, meditation methods can be detected in the Bible verse Joshua 1:8, “God says to meditate on His word day and night so we will obey it.” Islamic meditation is practiced in three forms: A. Dhikr (Remembrance) – the follower remembers the name of “Allah” in the heart without uttering a word from his mouth. B. Muraqabah (Contemplation of Scripture) – here one picks certain verses from the holy Koran and think about their meaning deeply. C. Tafakkur (Contemplation of Nature) – here one is required to ponder in depth over the signs or ‘Ayat’ of Allah in the natural world. A simple observation here would be that in effect, the mind is being focused on to a singular thought, word or phrase while tuning out the background chatter or noise.

The fundamental principle in Taoism or Taoist meditation is of generation, transformation and circulation of internal energy. When this particular flow of energy or force is attained, it is known as ‘deh-chee’. In addition to breathing exercises, Taoist meditation focuses on the expansion and contraction of the stomach that works directly with the natural flow of breath to attain mind and body balance.

Chi Kung, also phonetically spelled “qigong,” is an ancient form of Chinese yoga, incorporating breathing techniques with an entire system of postures, exercises and meditation techniques. A person practicing Qi Gong may appear to be sitting or standing quietly in a peaceful meditation, being aware of their body and the world around them. In the process, a deep sense of wellbeing and peace falls over the body, slowly building up so that they can move through the five stances (five minutes in each stance) as inner strength, balance and the cultivation of Qi grows stronger. Outwardly, Wuji Qigong is an exercise and stretch version of meditation, focusing on synchronizing the breath with slow movements of the body and guided visualizations.

World Spa Meditation An Age Old ArtZen or zazen meditation in Japanese is the quintessence of Zen Buddhist practice. Zen meditation pacifies the mind and attains calmness. The correct body pose is an imperative part of this form of meditation. The proper sitting posture permits the body muscles to be properly regulated to avoid unnecessary stress. Zen, like all the other meditation forms basic or complex, can be practiced daily when the body is naturally relaxed.

Now if we were to swing to the far side of meditation, we enter the zone of trance meditation. Trance meditation is the art of deliberately changing the state of consciousness to join into the flow of the universe. The three general ways to alter the consciousness do tend to go to extremes and may be harmful to the body. The first way is by altering the actual physical body processes by any number of methods that alter brain chemistry. Many cultures have used potent plant extracts to alter perception while holding spiritual ceremonies. The second way is by fasting, sleep-deprivation, exposure to extremes in temperature or sensation (pain/pleasure). The third is sensory deprivation. Trans meditation needs to be supervised and some practitioners considered this dangerous.

Native American Indians would engage in meditation to get in touch with the greater souls. The process would entail them breathing in smoldering herbs, chanting while steady drumbeats created a hypnotic aura in their minds. Various tribes in Africa derive their form of meditation from varied sources with the aim to connect with the universe. The Ausar Auset Society draws religious beliefs and cultures from ancient Ethiopia & Egypt. According to the Ausar society, a person needs to sit in a quiet place, light incense, play drum based music and focus the mind to reach a meditative trance. Kemetic Meditation finds its roots in ancient Egypt where meditation, yoga and chanting allow one to attain a higher state of being. Australian Aborigines practiced trance meditation with the belief that this could transfer a person to the inner calmness, push the mind to greater heights and discover hidden knowledge of the subconscious mind. The traditional way of practicing this form was by creating a vibrating sound that put the person on a heightened state of reality to conjoin with the spiritual self.

Incense and chanting play a significant role in meditation. Burning incense like frankincense or sandalwood during the meditation process is said to facilitate in creating a positive environment and assists the mind to focus. Focus is attained by uniting the mind with the sense of smell through the aroma of the burning incense. Numerous rituals use incense, a practice that has been carried on through the ages. Mantra recitation is a widespread tool used in meditation. The focus on the hum created by the vocal chords and the repetition of the verses helps the mind to focus on this rhythm and fade out all background noise and thought. One can then still the mind.

Contrary to the general belief, meditation is not about sitting for successive hours in a lotus position to attain enlightenment. Meditation is about finding the balance in the body and still the wandering mind. It is important that one find a posture, a rhythm, a system or process that is comfortable for one self. Meditation aims at creating a space for healing, for awareness and in doing so, creates and attains tranquility. The more focused one gets, the clearer one becomes. Next article in this series looks at the ‘how to’ steps in meditation. minilogo

Bora Bora is an island lying in the Society Islands, a group belonging to the territory of French Polynesia that also includes the gorgeous islands of Papeete and Tahiti. Inhabited since the fourth century by Polynesians, the island chain was visited by Europeans for the first time in the eighteenth century. Along with Tahiti, it has earned its name as a world-famous vacation destination.

Four million years ago, the island was forged from cooling lava erupting from volcanic activity. Extinct volcano peaks that form an amazing background set against the blue pacific waters and white sands dominate the center of the island. The main island of Bora Bora features steep and jagged peaks of Mt. Pahia (elevation of 2,165 feet). As one approaches from the sea or air, one can’t help but be awed by the basalt obelisk of Mt. Otemanu (2,379 feet), the remains of an extinct volcano, a natural sculpture that towers majestically over an island of intense emerald green. Surrounding the island is a deep blue lagoon and a long barrier reef. The main town of Bora Bora is Vaitape, a settlement of about 8,000 people.

The guests and their needs are their primary concerns – personalized treatments can be developed after a private consultation with the spa director, Mrs. Brigitte Cicéron.

Bora Bora Island is the most well known and traveled French Polynesian Leeward Island. This means there are a lot of travelers and tourists year round on the island looking for things to do, see, buy, or eat. From the finest of Black pearl shops and unique arts and crafts stores to general merchandise, Bora Bora is a shopper’s paradise. As for restaurants and dining, the famous island has a great number to choose from including the finest in French cuisine and tasty local treats. minilogo

One indulges in the finer things in life that escape from the list of daily desires. It is not just the unique location, the extra ordinary history and the serene environment that makes a destination remarkable. A spa offers the guest an opportunity to experience bliss that would otherwise be absent from the daily persuit of life.

The beauty of Bali is reflected in its old and new, natural and man made. Be it the Balinese arts and craft that trace their roots back to the late 13th century Majapathi Kingdom or the craftsmen practicing their painting, wood & stone carving and weaving skills handed down through the generations. Be it the Balinese dancers in rich costumes with intricately choreographed hand-face-eye movement as part of their religious expression or the ancient Balinese Hindu temples preserved and worshipped in this predominently muslim country. Be it the infusion of Dutch-Indian-Chinese cultures ever present in the architecture, food and lifestyle or the splendid sunsets viewed from gorgeous beaches, they all captivate the heart, and collectively make us forget home.

Bali has evolved as an international holiday destination over the years largely because of its rich culture, gracious locals and beautiful beaches that pull people from all over the world towards itself. The tourist numbers have grown through the decades despite the deadly bombings in Bali, the global flu epidemics, earthquakes and the various financial crisis that threatened the country’s stability. Not surprisingly, the natural and human wonders of Bali prevailed as compared to other similar destinations such as Sharm el-Sheikh that took a much longer time to regain their credibility with the globe trotter.

The appeal of any location multiples when accommodations and the accessories (read spa, jacuzzi, private beach, Michelin star restaurant … the list is endless) that go with it are world class, offer a level of comfort and luxury that pampers and indulges. The itinerary of the globe trotter should cater to and take care of the mind, body and soul. While arts and crafts sooth the eyes and mind, the indulgence in spa treatments sooth the body and soul. Admiring and appreciating the centuries old art is one thing, being covered in herbal clay while trained therapists kneed and stretch the muscles of the aching body is something quite rewarding at a much different level.

World Spa Art Of SpaThe spas in Bali, more often than not, become standards for other locations to follow. The bar is set, and raised, ever so often that other destinations simply play catch up to the beautifully crafted world class spas that call Bali home.

Bali spas proffer an incredible number of spa treatments tha4 suits just about everyone. World Travel Magazine reviews two exotic spas of Bali that are a perfect blend of being chic, sumptuous and sophisticated.

First on the list of ‘must visit’ spas in Bali is the elegant Alila Villas Soori. Alila have three luxury properties in Indonesia, of which Alila Villas Soori and Alila Villas Uluwatu are located in Bali. Alila Villas Soori offers its guests various boutique villa formats with private pools, award winning architecture, sea & padi field views and world class facilities. The resort is a relaxing, stylish and blissful paradise setting for beachfront living.

World Spa Art Of SpaThe concept of the spa at Alila Villas Soori is envisioned as a sanctuary, a soothing cocoon tucked under a water body. The most unique element of the spa is the transitional lighting within all spaces, from outside with total sunlight, to the foyer and relaxation areas with diminishing natural light and finally to the total controlled darkness of the treatment rooms. The first time visitors to Spa Alila are always taken on a private tour to the treatment area, yoga classroom, fitness center and spa boutique for a closer look at the natural products that are specially designed for Spa Alila.

A typical treatment starts off with a private consultation where the guest are served signature ice lemongrass, honey and ginger tea accompanied with the warm smiles of the spa therapists. Once the massage therapy commences, the guests are escorted into the wet treatment room exiting the dry treatment suite and passing under a sky light which acts like a transition point between rooms incorporating some of Earth’s stimulating elements.

Spa Alila use exclusive ingredients in their spa treatments, some sourced from local villagers. For instance virgin coconut oil and sweet almond oil are sourced locally in East Bali where fresh coconut is shredded and cold pressed to make coconut milk. The milk is fermented, separated and filtered free of chemicals without using high-heat treatment.

The massage therapies in Spa Alila, as in any other good spa resort, are based on individual need that range from pampering, pleasure, health, wellness, spiritual journey and fitness. The massage therapies are a combination of Asian and Western therapy techniques including deep tissue, relaxing, nurturing and a special pregnancy massage for expectant mothers.

Therapeutic Massage is a ninety minute treatment of Spa Alila which performs a complete body awakening experience with a combination of therapeutic massage techniques using fluent strokes of different depths and intensity. Long Balinese strokes improve lymphatic drainage and circulation. Swedish deep tissue techniques work into muscles to relieve tension and stiffness. Acupressure points are used for specific stimulation while Thai movements add elements of stretching to increase mobility. A note to the reader, I dose$ off around twenty minutes into the massage (so much for the awakening experience!), relaxed and in deep sleep.

Feel tension dissolve with the seventy five minute Balinese Massage. This ancient Balinese healing therapy combines gentle stretching, long therapeutic strokes and skin rolling to relieve muscle pain. Palm and thumb pressure techniques are also applied to unravel the deepest stress and improve blood flow.

World Spa Art Of Spa An oasis of serenity surrounded by nature, the Estate defines the pinnacle of residential health retreat combining holistic wellness with exceptional villa accommodation. From rooms, suites, residences to villas, the Estate caters to a variety of moods, views and spirit. Located near a spiritual enclave of jungle, river and sun-rich clearings just north of Ubud, the Estate makes one forget that Bali’s beauty is not restricted just 4o the beaches.

The Estate’s wellness retreat has an extensive range of therapies and a list of specialists to choose from. It does take a while to appreciate the depth and extent of their wellness and fitness menu. Thai, Indonesian, Indian, Chinese, Swedish, Dead Sea… these were just the varieties of massage therapies on offer and we hadn’t even touched their fitness, spiritual and psychological section yet. For instance, they have a fitness package that drops you into the enormous caldera and ascend the 700m high volcanic cone of Mount Batur, by torchlight, to witness sunrise over the crater and its lake, with Mount Agung looming in the background. Be back in time for breakfast and a yoga session.e3C/p>

World Spa Art Of SpaWhen in Bali, do what the ancient Balinese royalty have done, enjoy a luxurious Javanese Royal Lulur Bath. A two hour production, this luxury bath is bound to pamper you enough to want it as a day starter, every day. Perfect for tired skin, lulur is the ultimate luxurious beauty ritual from the Royal Palaces of central Java. The soothing process begins with an Indonesian Massage and then an aromatic spice body scrub precedes the application of cooling yogurt and a relaxing flower-filled bath. The treatment concludes with a relaxing application of body lotion to hydrate the skin.

Another great treatment on offer is the Warm Muscle Wrap. Using the traditional medicine of Bali, Warm Muscle Wrap is believed to relieve tense muscles and minor rheumatic conditions. Hand crushed rice is blended with warming spices to create a stimulating rub. This Balinese Boreh, a traditional herbal scrub, offers an all-over deep heat experience and concludes with a Taksu Massage. The massage therapy is ideal for helping aching bodies after exercise, or an early morning walk on a volcano, and wonderful for breaking-down cellulite.

When on a vacation to a destination resort, one winds down and distances oneself from the stress inducing tasks. One indulges in the finer things in life that escape from the list of daily desires. It is not just the unique location, the extra ordinary history and the serene environment that makes a destination remarkable. A spa offers the guest an opportunity to experience bliss that would otherwise be absent from the daily persuit of life. The spas in Alila Villas Suri and Como Shambala Estate fill this void perfectly. minilogo

Yoga is practiced by millions of people across the world and has grown strength to strength over the years.

Yoga, to most of us, evokes images of people moving their bodies into impossible poses and positions; one would be forgiven to mistake them for contortionists’. The concept of yoga is much more deeper and spiritual than simple, or for that matter, complicated body movements. The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word Yuj connoting to yoke, join or unite; Yoga is a form of exercise and meditation. It does not require any fancy equipment or environment but a sincere effort put in daily by an individual to control mind and body, a simple yet powerful tool for wellness.

Yoga is practiced by millions of people across the world and has grown strength to strength over the years, however, yoga has often been misunderstood and to some extent misused for the sake of better commerce. We at the World Travel Magazine will abet you alter the perception by discovering different facets of yoga and help you decipher the intricacies of this ancient knowledge.

world_spa_yoga_04Yoga is not just another form of an exercise. Far from it, according to seasoned practitioners, it is a means of “joining the individual soul to the universal soul” or perhaps the “cessation of the fluctuations in consciousness”. Yoga aims at training the consciousness of an individual for a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility that is achieved through the three paths of action, knowledge and devotion.

The earnest practitioner of yoga experiences physical revitalization and discovers a deeper spiritual and emotional state of being. The regular practice of yoga is said to alleviate one from mental and physical pain and enables one to breathe better. The deep breathing exercises involved and postures of yoga give the body a chance to detox and leave a person energized far beyond the end of the session.

The current state of the lifestyle of people is tangled in a web of constant strain and weariness. Yoga serves as a haven to all those seeking the elusive state of relaxation and inward awareness. There is a general positive consensus when it comes to the benefits of yoga.

Yoga first came into being at least 4,000 years ago and is said to have developed during the period of ‘Sat Yuga’ or the Golden age. The excavation site at Indus valley civilization confirmed the origin of yoga to the place, after the discovery of yogi like figures engraved on soapstone seals resembling postures and poses used in yoga. Yoga is a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline, a summation of the control of one’s breath, meditation and the adoption of specific bodily postures.

To a casual observer, yoga may look similar to any other exercise form, such as Tai Chi for instance. It is after practicing yoga that one is able to differentiate and appreciate the art form. There are a variety of Asanas each with differing objectives; whether it is to build strength, make one sweat, improve one’s posture, gain flexibility or simply to build stamina.

The spirit of yoga lies in uplifting the life force through a succession of physical exercises (Asanas), mental exercises (Pranayama) and meditation (Dhyan) to control the wandering mind. There are several types or Marga (path) of yoga that can be taken in order to reunite with the energy within. The variations entrenched in yoga are designed in a way, where each type of yoga stresses on a specific path embracing a certain set of practices. The yoga styles personify a ladder, from the ‘lowest’ form of Hatha yoga, focusing on physical postures and breathing methods, to the ‘highest’ form known as Raja yoga, or union by mental mastery.

world_spa_yoga_03A large number of resort spas, studios and gyms provide yoga classes with groups of 10 to 20 students, varying in intensity for novices and experts alike. For the luxury seekers who does not mind practicing yoga in surroundings with a million dollar view, destinations such as Ananda Spa near Rishikesh or Jive Spa from Taj hotel resorts, ensures that one hones the art in the lap of luxury.

The ancient art of yoga has kept up with the trends and has evolved variations such as yogilates, a fusion of yoga and pilates, or the more robust aerial yoga, a combination of yoga and aerial acrobatics.

It is said that practice of yoga reduces a variety of medical conditions but one suspects that any unfit body will be plagued with a range of dieses and any form of exercise, basic or otherwise, would be beneficial. One has to blend yoga with eating habits and leading a balanced lifestyle. Yoga harmonizes the mind, body and soul – the end result is a flexible body and relief from ailments. minilogo
