Oetker Collection, the luxury hospitality brand, has announced its newest addition to its portfolio and the first property in the United States: The Vineta Hotel. The Vineta Hotel will mark the brand’s 12th Masterpiece Hotel.

The Oetker Collection is known for its unique, luxurious hotels in iconic destinations worldwide, including The Bristol in Paris and Eden Rock – St Barths. Each hotel in the collection is one-of-a-kind, offering guests a unique experience that cannot be found anywhere else.

The Vineta Hotel, Palm Beach

The Vineta Hotel will be no different, situated in Palm Beach, Florida. Guests of The Vineta Hotel can expect world-class service and luxurious amenities, all within walking distance of the white sand beaches and crystal blue waters of Palm Beach, located just two blocks off Worth Avenue, famous for its designer boutiques, art galleries and coveted restaurants.

Oetker Collection’s The Vineta Hotel will transform the historic Palm Beach hotel heralding a bold new chapter in the property’s nearly 100-year history with renovation led by Paris-based interior designer Tino Zervudachi. The ambitious renovation will preserve the hotel’s distinctive pale-pink façade and quintessential example of Mediterranean Revival architecture for which Palm Beach is renowned.

The Vineta Hotel, set to open in late 2023, promises a luxurious experience for guests, with 41 freshly renovated rooms and a fully transformed Leopard Lounge. The popular night spot was once a hotspot for celebrities and locals alike, and it is poised to make a comeback against a backdrop of flowering vines and palms.

A luxury escape to Palm Beach

The hotel’s opening comes at a time when Palm Beach is experiencing a resurgence of interest from travellers. The area has long been known for its impeccable beaches, but in recent years, it has also become home to an array of upscale shops, restaurants, and hotels. As a result, the Vineta Hotel is poised to become a premier destination for travellers seeking the ultimate Palm Beach experience.

“The concept behind the interior design for The Vineta Hotel is to infuse it with a fresh Palm Beach feel by bringing in clean lines, a relaxed ambiance, and a stylish and younger feeling palette of colours,” said Tino Zervudachi. “It’s my aim to create a real new venue for visitors and residents alike – taking extra care to enhance the exterior dining spaces both at the pool and the courtyard – by establishing a cosmopolitan look that blends European design cues with the destination’s unmistakable aesthetic.”

“This is a monumental moment in the brand’s history as we announce our first Masterpiece Hotel in the United States,” said Timo Gruenert, CEO of Oetker Collection. “Many of our existing guests have long visited or are residents of Palm Beach, and we therefore look forward to extending Oetker Collection’s unique hospitality ethos based on our values of family spirit, elegance and genuine kindness, to this wonderful town with The Vineta Hotel.”

Finding the perfect getaway with Oetker Collection

Oetker Collection is an exceptional portfolio of Masterpiece Hotels and villas that offer the perfect blend of elegance and family spirit. The brand’s recent debut of The Woodward in Geneva and the forthcoming opening of Hotel La Palma in Capri exemplify this commitment to luxury and hospitality. These hotels are more than just a place to stay – they’re an experience. From the moment you arrive, you’re treated like royalty. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure your every need is met, and the amenities are second to none.

If you love Disney cruises, you’re going to love the newest, biggest and boldest ship yet – Disney Wish. Setting sail in July 2022, this magnificent vessel will please everyone in your family. With plenty of activities and accommodations for all ages, plus exciting new features never before seen on a Disney cruise ship, Wish is sure to be a wish come true for all who experience her.

The Disney Wish is the newest Disney Cruise Line ship, infused with more storytelling than ever. Disney imagineers took family vacations adding one-of-a-kind entertainment and innovative “firsts” from bow to stern.

The Disney Wish will have AquaMouse, the first Disney attraction at sea aboard the Disney Wish. There will also be “Swim”-finity and beyond in a new Toy Story-themed waterplay district for the little ones. And for the foodies in the family, there are three brand-new family restaurants on board Disney Cruise Line. The Disney Wish sails its maiden voyage on July 14, followed by three- and four-night cruises to Nassau, Bahamas, and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, from Port Canaveral, Florida.

AquaMouse – First Disney attraction at sea aboard the Disney Wish

Disney Cruise Line takes fun in the sun to the next level on the Disney Wish with the debut of AquaMouse, a brand-new family water attraction that will bring to life the adventures of “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” animated shorts like never before. Additionally, three themed districts offer fun water features, quick and casual dining options, and dedicated space for families, children and adults to relax and soak up the sun.

Complete with show scenes, lighting, special effects, and splashtacular surprises, this first-of-its-kind water ride sends guests on a fun family adventure through 760 feet of winding tubes suspended high above the upper decks.

“Swim”-finity and beyond in a new Toy Story-themed waterplay district

Children can have a tub-full of fun in the Toy Story Splash Zone, a fantastic water playground where Woody, Buzz and friends are adorably reimagined as larger-than-life rubber bath toys, moving and spraying water at kids’ whim. Inspired by the Disney and Pixar short “Partysaurus Rex,” this bathtub-themed splash zone combines the Old West of Woody’s Roundup with the intergalactic world of Buzz Lightyear, featuring two toddler-sized slides and pop jets, geysers and bubblers galore.

Three Brand-New Family Restaurants on the Disney Wish

With a debut of three brand-new family restaurants, the Disney Wish will take guests on a remarkable culinary journey to an enchanted “Frozen” kingdom, an Avengers technology showcase and the golden age of Hollywood.

Arendelle, A Frozen Dining Adventure

Arendelle, A Frozen Dining Adventure

Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure is Disney’s first “Frozen”-themed theatrical dining experience, bringing the kingdom of Arendelle to life through immersive live entertainment — featuring favourite characters like Elsa, Anna, Kristoff and Olaf — and world-class cuisine infused with Nordic influences. Families are invited to attend a royal engagement party for Queen Anna and Kristoff, picking up the story where Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen 2” left off.

Disney Wish Worlds of Marvel

Disney Wish Worlds of Marvel

Worlds of Marvel is the first Marvel cinematic dining adventure, where guests play an interactive role in an action-packed Avengers mission unfolding around them, complete with a worldly menu inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Avengers: Quantum Encounter” follows Ant-Man and The Wasp as they embark on their first public speaking engagement on behalf of the Avengers. Every table at Worlds of Marvel features an interactive Quantum Core, a brand-new device that can cause objects to shrink and grow remotely. Guests assist Ant-Man and The Wasp as they attempt some small-scale trials, perhaps shrinking oversized luggage for easy stateroom storage.

Named for the year The Walt Disney Company was founded, 1923 is an elegant celebration of the company’s legacy, paying homage to the golden age of animation and offering a tasteful tribute to its Californian heritage.

Combining classic Hollywood glamour with a dash of Disney whimsy, 1923 features two lavishly appointed dining rooms, aptly named for the men behind the magic of the original film studio — Walt and Roy Disney. The rooms are adorned with more than 1,000 drawings, props and other tools of the trade, providing an inside look at the evolution of Disney animation from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to “Frozen 2.”

Disney Wish

Disney Wish

The Disney Wish also features new food and beverage options on the upper decks, including Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods — the perfect place for families to grab a quick bite for lunch, dinner or anytime in between. This open-air eatery features five themed food stalls: Mickey’s Smokestack Barbecue, Donald’s Cantina, Daisy’s Pizza Pies, Goofy’s Grill and Sweet Minnie’s Ice Cream.

Season themed cruises on board  Disney Cruise Line

Halloween on the High Seas returns to Disney Cruise Line from mid-September through October 2022. On select sailings across the fleet, guests can dress up and join Disney characters in their Halloween costumes at Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party; enjoy themed food, beverages and crafts; and immerse themselves in a ghostly ship takeover with elaborate decor and a magical Pumpkin Tree.

From early November through December, the Disney Cruise Line fleet is decked from bow-to-stern with holiday cheer and entertainment during Very Merrytime Cruises. Holiday magic is unwrapped for the whole family with festive holiday decor, favourite characters in their finest holiday attire and a special visit from Santa Claus.

The green credentials of Disney Wish

Disney Wish

From bow to stern, Walt Disney Imagineers designed the Disney Wish to be among the most fuel and energy-efficient cruise ships on the water. Through a combination of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and numerous advances in ship design, Disney Cruise Line’s (DCL) newest ship is estimated to be nearly 30 percent more fuel efficient and emit approximately 20 percent less greenhouse gases.

Hotel Bel-Air, the epitome of luxury and style, is hosting a photo exhibition featuring the work of world-renowned celebrity photographer Timothy White. The exhibition is complimentary and open to the public from June 1st to July 31st, seven days a week.

Guests will have the opportunity to view photographs of some of Hollywood’s most iconic celebrities, including Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Liza Minelli and Robin Williams, with all photographs available for purchase. This is a rare opportunity to see the work of one of the world’s most sought-after photographers up close and personal.

Who is Timothy White?

So often, we are told that a picture is worth a thousand words, but what happens when the photographer behind the lens is world-renowned Timothy White? We are graced with pure magic. His three decades of experience in the industry shines through in every shot- from the playful yet candid moments of legendary actors to the fresh-faced innocence of upcoming stars.

There is a sense of intimacy and easiness in each frame that can only be attributed to his skill as not just a technician but as an artist. Add to that his unfettered access to some of the most influential people of our time, and you have a recipe for greatness. The result is a visually arresting collection of images that manages to capture a moment in history and the very essence of human nature.

Timothy White’s behind the scene interaction with celebrities

When White was a “young pup” in the business, he was sent to photograph Sidney Poitier. He was in awe of Poitier’s talent and dignity and was stunned when the actor asked him to help choose a wardrobe for a poolside shoot. The two would work together many times over the years. White’s admiration for Poitier’s professionalism and talent was evident each time they worked together, and their mutual respect led to a lasting friendship. White has said that photographing Poitier was always a pleasure and that he feels lucky to have had the opportunity to capture the actor’s unique presence on film. Thanks to their collaboration, White has some of his most iconic images, and Poitier has some of his most memorable performances.

The photographs on display represent a cross-section of White’s vast archive and demonstrate the deep trust and relationships he has built with his subjects over the years, including with Sophia Loren, who graciously allowed him to direct her in a phenomenal shoot that featured her running on the beach, laying on a rock, and even jumping in the water and ruining her gown.

Also featured is a photograph captured of Brad Pitt, who went on a motorcycle trip with White. The selection also includes a portrait of Whitney Houston taken during the many times she worked with him throughout her life, a powerfully emotive image of James Gandolfini, and a photo of Jay-Z captured in the days before he grew into the mogul and legend he was to become.

“It is an absolute honour to host this exhibition at Hotel Bel-Air,” said White. “I’m all about the history, and I have always been very aware of the hotels in this town – The Beverly Hills Hotel and Hotel Bel-Air – and their powerful representation of the history of Hollywood. This exhibition felt like such a natural synergy between my life, my career, my legacy, and the hotel’s life and legacy.”

Behind the ivy-covered walls of the Hotel Bel-Air, part of the Dorchester Collection, lies a Hollywood haven where celebrities can escape the hustle and bustle of Tinseltown. Since opening its doors in 1946, the hotel has maintained a reputation for Old Hollywood glamour, understated luxury, and privacy that has attracted stars and royalty alike.

Over the years, the Bel-Air has been home to some of Hollywood’s most beloved icons, including Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe. Today, the hotel’s celebrity connection endures, as it remains a favourite refuge for A-listers looking to escape the paparazzi and enjoy a little privacy. Thanks to its storied past and impeccable service, the Hotel Bel-Air continues to be one of Hollywood’s most cherished landmarks. ◼

Despite being one of the most remote locations in Europe, Finnmark manages to impress travel enthusiasts worldwide. Being within the Arctic Circle during winter promises to be an epic adventure and a place that’s on almost everyone’s must-visit list during winter. This entire section of Northern Norway is fjord country, with a coastline that is a rugged and a haven for trekking enthusiasts.

The night sky here lights up with the brilliant display of aurora borealis, making the whole experience magical and out of this world. Outdoor activities at night such as dog sledging and snowshoeing ensure your nights are just as exciting as your day.

This northern destination, away from most human settlements, offers an easy escapade into the wilderness. Watch reindeers from a distance as you cross-country ski with your local guide. With frozen fjords and lakes on hand, do give ice fishing, or better yet, ice bathing a go.

7. Mountains of Bregenzerwald in Vorarlberg, Austria

The valleys and peaks of the mountainous Bregenzerwald are an abode of winter and snow activities and are a must-visit during January. The region offers different skiing facilities that you can enjoy with your family. All you need to do this January is to get a 3Valley ski pass for the area, and that’s about it. You will be able to access all the different ski areas daily for the duration of your trip.

In case you are not in the mood to ski, do try out other winter activities, such as lounging by the snow with a hot cup of cocoa or visiting a husky ranch. On the other hand, suppose you aspire to be a little more active, hike and explore the charming town centre. Try out the horse carriage ride in Sankt Johann, or get on a toboggan run down the many slopes around the valley.

8. Skiing in Turkey’s Ulu Dag, the mountain of the Gods

If you’re looking for paradise on earth, then take time out to visit Ulu Dağ in Bursa this January. This high mountain in north-western Anatolia is covered entirely by snow. The local ski resort 30 minutes away from town offers comfortable, overnight stays. This also happens to be Turkey’s most popular winter sports centre.

Ulu Dağ is also known as ‘The Mountain of Gods’, a once sacred site. It’s said that Zeus lived here with all his fellow gods, and hence this place has been known as ‘the mountain where they live’ or ‘heavenly home’.

You’ll find five different forest species here, perfect for forestbathing while enjoying nature at its finest. And if not enough time or energy remains after all these activities, then take in this beautiful mountainside via a cable car ride with 360-degree views of this Turkish resort.

As you drive towards Mount Oldag, the scenery becomes more and more magnificent. You can take a break and have a hot meal at one of the cafes on your way up. There are many lounges, restaurants and tea houses throughout this region where travellers rest before reaching the top. These breaks allow for some peace before beginning another adventure – hiking through the rugged forestry trails.

9. Sermilik Fjord in Greenland

Sermilik Fjord is one of the best places to visit in January. No matter what winter activity you are interested in, Sermilik Fjord offers it all. Sermilik Fjord is located on the eastern coast of Greenland and has a spectacular coastline with majestic mountains that rise straight up from the seawater, forming part of a greater fjord system.

Getting to Sermilik fjord is an adventure in itself. You need to first travel from Kangerlussuaq to Nuuk and on to Kulusuk. From here, it’s a simple matter of taking a helicopter that flies the route twice a week. Dogsleds or fishing boats are also common transport options here!

If you like winter sports, Sermilik Fjord is the place to be. If you want more winter sports than just skiing, Sermilik Fjord has that as well. The region’s wilderness and sheets of snow offer winter activities to suit every taste. Sermilik Fjord is a good place for winter camping. The wildlife of Sermilik Fjord offers an excellent opportunity for photographing animals in their natural environment.

Even though dog sledging is accessible in other parts of the world, the ‘sledge dogs’ in Greenland come from the original Greenlandic pedigree, making the experience unique. You can even spend your time hiking, kayaking among the icebergs whilst exploring the coastline.

The concept of ice diving under a Glacier gets real here, and divers can go underwater and swim next to, or under, slabs of ice and glaciers. In addition, divers can encounter minke whales, narwhals and other marine creatures unique to the arctic.

Spirituality and Wellness in January 2022

If you wish to take a break from the monotonous routine of the last two years and look forward to rejuvenating yourselves, here are the best places to visit for a wellness retreat this January.

10. Wellness break in Sri Lanka

In January, plenty of sunshine right at the beginning of the monsoon season makes Sri Lanka an ideal place to visit during January. As a land soaked in cultural practices, head to any part of the island and witness the Thai Pongal celebrations with much grandeur.

Sri Lanka has many meditation centres outside Colombo, making it an ideal country for spiritual & wellness tourism. The objective of a wellness escape is to nourish a positive outlook in oneself, enhance mental wellbeing and rejuvenate. The Buddhist meditation activities here mainly deal with right mindfulness, right concentration and right view, three of the Noble eightfold path.

Some of the popular meditation centres in Sri Lanka include Ridee Vihara, Rockhill Hermitage, Kanduboda Meditation Center, Nilambe Buddhist Meditation Centre, Paramita International Meditation Center, Sri Subodharama international Meditation Center, Dhamma Kuta and Amawathura Meditation Center.

The search for wellness does not end with meditation and mental wellbeing. There is an entire segment of cuisine under the umbrella of Ayurveda that focuses on balance in the body through food. Almost all good wellness centres in Sri Lanka incorporate Ayurveda inspired food in their menu.

11. A well-deserved break in Bali

Bali is an epicentre of all tourist destinations with its culture, beaches, nature and excellent hospitality in Asia. In addition, the comfortable weather of the region all through the year adds to its popularity amongst the travellers.

The Balinese are known for their love of the outdoors, and there is always something new to discover in central Bali. You can go on hikes up in altitude, view sunsets or try biking around town – all while experiencing new cultures. If you want to indulge in water sports within your comfort zone, then sea walking at Nusa Dua will get that adrenaline pumping one step at a time.

The best way to experience Bali is by taking advantage of its coastline. You can either head out into the sea or explore the nearby reefs, just a short boat ride away from Benoa Harbor. Bali is a traditional, cultural island. From its temples and paddy fields, you can explore Bali’s rich past while marvelling at how modern it looks today with rugged cliffs, serene beaches, lush forests, and not forgetting those fantastic sunsets.

There are plenty of luxury resorts to stay for tourists, but when in need of something rustic, then head just outside the towns where villages still exist from days gone by, offering visitors a chance to discover authentic Balinese culture first hand.

What comes to mind when you think of Beverly Hills – luxurious estates, stretched limousines, Hollywood starts and designer summer cabanas? Well, there’s a reason why all this and more make Beverly Hills the star studded city of California.

For well over a century, The Beverly Hills Hotel has been the go-to destination for Hollywood’s finest stars and the ultimate beacon of glamour in Los Angeles. With a rich history of providing exceptional experiences for hotel guests while lounging at the poolside, the cabanas at The Beverly Hills Hotel have been synonymous with luxurious leisure.

Paying homage to Beverly Hills glamorous self while putting a modern and personal spin on custom cabana experience, Gray Malin, fine art photographer and New York Times bestselling author, recently redesigned The Beverly Hills Hotel’s Cabana One for a fun poolside experience.

It is amongst the first pop up design installations in Beverly Hills. Designed with an effortlessly classic and chic California style in mind, Malin outfitted the cabana with Serena & Lily’s sophisticated furnishings. It also paid tribute to the iconic design and history of the hotel with CW Stockwell’s signature banana leaf wallpaper, Martinique, which has graced the walls of the Beverly Hills Hotel since it was first installed in 1949.

Marking a milestone for the Gray Malin brand, designing this cabana was Malin’s first comprehensive design project which showcases his design expertise in an iconic fashion and features a public display of his artwork.

“I am thrilled to finally share this project at The Beverly Hills Hotel which highlights my passion and aptitude for interior design, allowing guests to step into one of my photographs,” says Gray Malin. “With the tremendous history of the property in mind, I was inspired to create a space that paid homage to its glamorous past while putting a modern and personal spin on my custom cabana experience,” he added.

The collection celebrates the heritage of the property, inspired by its charming grounds and tinseltown history while incorporating Malin’s signature modern-day style. Scenes of beautiful people in vintage wardrobe and props from the 1950s and 1960s capture the jet set lifestyle and splendid luxury of Los Angeles’ Golden Age.

The colour palette draws inspiration from relaxing coastal tones and vintage glamour, incorporating natural hues such as sand, pink, white and green in an array of solid and patterned fabrics and textiles. Rattans, raffias and other natural textures makes the cabana feel like a relaxing retreat, with elements like refined custom chaises, a handwoven rug, hanging chair, and an inviting sofa that enhance the comfortable yet elevated design.

The featured furnishings make the cabana feel like a relaxing retreat, combining rattan and basketweave textures, a hand-woven rug and an inviting sectional sofa that enhances the comfortable yet elevated design.

The Gray Malin Cabana also features an upgrade to the fabrication of the canopy, incorporating a custom look with eye-catching pink and white stripes. Other notable alluring details that Malin included are hand-stitched decorative throw pillows and blankets, a new outdoor umbrella with elegant tassels, and vintage props styled to complete the look.

While enjoying a day of leisure at the cabana, timeless Hollywood glamour is ever present courtesy of prints from Malin’s fine art photography series Gray Malin at The Beverly Hills Hotel which adorn the walls.

“Gray Malin did a wonderful job maintaining the hotel’s timeless Hollywood design while also incorporating his signature whimsical and vibrant style. We look forward to providing our guests with an enhanced cabana experience that will lovingly highlight the pool’s legendary history,” says Edward Mady, regional director and general manager, The Beverly Hills Hotel. ◼

Private Luxury: The Most Undiscovered Caribbean Islands. If turquoise water, white sand beaches and fiery pink sunsets are what you’re after, then there’s no better place on earth to visit than the Caribbean Sea. Unsurprisingly, the Caribbean is reliably popular every winter, as weary travellers head south in the colder months, seeking sunny days and rum-fuelled nights from the Bahamas down to Trinidad and Tobago.

The Beach Boys popularized the Caribbean’s tropical allure in their melodies, and Bob Marley immortalized its soul and ethos in his lyrics. Mustique was a favoured getaway of Princess Margaret looking to escape the press—these days, Beyoncé evades the paparazzi by heading to St. Barts.

But there’s still much to the islands you’ve yet to discover. Even the most discerning, sophisticated traveller would be surprised to find they’d somehow missed these hidden gems tucked away alongside some of the most popular snowbird getaways on earth; luxury travel at its best.

So, if your idea of a perfect tropical vacation doesn’t include massive amounts of tourists, don’t be discouraged. There are more than 7,000 islands in the Caribbean archipelago, of which some are less discovered—and more luxurious—than the rest.

From romantic, open-air resorts overlooking the sea in Saint Lucia to the pristine and picturesque beaches of South Caicos, here are the most elegant (and underrated) islands to visit in the Caribbean, guaranteed to bring visitors bliss and solitude (and five-star amenities, of course).

1. Caribbean Travel Guide: South Caicos

Turks and Caicos Islands, British West Indies: With its breathtaking white sand beaches and vivid aquamarine coast, the Turks and Caicos Islands have long been a favourite hideaway for the rich and famous. Keith Richards, Taylor Swift, Brad Pitt, Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey and Rihanna are regular visitors to this Caribbean destination, world-renowned to have the best beaches in the region, if not the entire planet. The reason for this technicolour tropical paradise is that the sand consists of coral and shell (lending it’s blush-like colour), and the beaches reflect the island’s limestone foundation.

Most visitors opt to stay in Providenciales, famous of all Caribbean destinations (and the one with an international airport). But there are eight main islands in the Turks and Caicos, and over 40 smaller islands and cays, which are pristine and uninhabited.

We encourage you to hop on an inter-Caribbean flight from the airport to South Caicos, where the solitude (and romance) is unrivalled. The super-secluded 8.2-square-mile island is home to a population of less than 1,600 residents, so you’re more likely to spot a wild donkey roaming outside your villa than another human being.

The tourism industry that altered the other islands in the Turks and Caicos has yet to impact South Caicos: The island has four different types of cacti, but only three hotels.

Of the three hotels, Sailrock Resort is the best choice—the resort overlooks the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Caribbean on the other. The first 5-star luxury resort on South Caicos, Sailrock opened in 2017, and it feels like you have your very own private island. Book a stay at Sail Rock, the first luxury resort in South Caicos, to capitalize on your whimsical surroundings.

Sailrock is navigable mainly by golf cart, useful when navigating the property’s 770 tropical acres. Watch the moon set over the Caribbean Islands while sipping cocktails poolside at the Great House, or relax in a hammock overlooking that outrageously vibrant aquamarine water, rocking back and forth to the gentle surf.

But it needn’t be all rest and relaxation. South Caicos’ remote location within the West Indies archipelago is perfect for island-hopping. We suggest exploring the uninhabited islands and cays by boat.
Snorkel one of the most magnificent reefs on the planets—the snorkelling in Turks and Caicos is among the best in the world —and sunbathe upon the secluded coasts of the myriad surrounding islands. The striking rock formations may remind you of Malta or Greece—though, with its distinct Caribbean flair, South Caicos has no real rivals in the Mediterranean.

One visit to the island will have you convinced of its uniqueness. You will get a taste of authentic island living, not just in the natural beauty of your surroundings, but in your community. The spot to be on the weekend is Triple J’s Grill, which feels like a backyard barbecue—and is.

2. Caribbean Travel Guide: Dominica

Leeward Islands, Eastern Caribbean: Turks and Caicos is part of the British West Indies in the northern Caribbean (alongside Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, and the Cayman Islands), but from here on out, we’re headed south, to the far less well-known Eastern Caribbean.

Home to Emerald Pools, Boiling Lakes and Champagne Reefs, Dominica is known as the “Nature Island” of the tropics. The landscape of Dominica, as its moniker suggests, is appropriately majestic. However, most would-be visitors are more likely to mispronounce the country’s name (it’s Domin-EEK-ah) and confuse its location (no, it’s not part of the Dominican Republic) than to list its stunning natural attributes.

One visit to the island will convince the most well-travelled visitors to believe that the nation’s diversity is evocative of the best vistas from around the globe.

Though this island is relatively small, its diverse ecosystems resemble some of the most iconic landscapes on earth—not to mention some iconic places to stay (which has gotten a recent boost via the opening of the new Kempinski.) Dominica opened its first beachfront 5-star resort, Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski, Dominica, this past October in Cabrits National Park.

The cliffside Fort Young Hotel overlooking the ocean in Roseau resembles the Mediterranean coast in Italy, and Pagua Bay House in Pagua Bay is heaven for those looking for a Bali-type immersive moment in nature, on the beach. But nature is unavoidable on the island—just driving through the country, there are moments of breathlessness.

Dominica’s nickname is certainly well-earned. The relatively tiny island is home to nine of the 16 active volcanoes in the Caribbean. While this may sound overwhelming to the leisure traveller—and perhaps enticing to the adventurer—the nation’s beauty is something that can be appreciated by the entire planet.

The hot springs and mud pots in the Valley of Desolation rivals Yellowstone—only without the crowds, of course. The Boiling Lake in Morne Trois Pitons National Park is the second-largest in the world (New Zealand’s Frying Pan Lake has top honour), and the jagged green mountains overlooking the water evokes Hawaii’s Na Pali Coast. The lush interior rainforests are reminiscent of the subtropical jungles in (relatively) nearby Belize.

While visiting, be sure to partake in some whale-watching (Dominica is also the whale-watching capital of the Caribbean, home to a year-round population of female Sperm Whales), and embark on a Boiling Lake Hike.

Visit the Kalinago Heritage Center to learn more about the island’s history and the legacy of the people of Dominica. Afterward, go off-the-beaten-path (to delectable results) at Islet View Restaurant, located on an unnamed road in Castle Bruce, on your way home. Befriend your driver or a local for exact directions, and thank us later when you’re toasting on the deck with homemade plantain chips and rum punch.

3. Caribbean Travel Guide: Grenada

The picturesque capital city of St George’s in the Caribbean nation of Grenada, also known as the “Spice Island”, image by NAPA

Windward Islands, Eastern Caribbean: Our next choice takes us just south, from the “Nature Island” of Dominica to the “Spice Island” of Grenada, also located in the Eastern Caribbean. Grenada is a wondrous location for the discerning traveller since the selfie-wielding masses haven’t yet infiltrated every public space, and its breathtaking beauty is still mostly undiscovered to the majority of travellers, even those well-acquainted with the Caribbean. This can be partially attributed to its location, in the southern Caribbean Sea, merely 100 nautical miles off the coast of Venezuela.

Less-motivated travellers will opt for closer islands when it comes to a weekend getaway, especially if they’re departing from the United States (the Bahamian island of Bimini is a mere 60 miles from Miami, for comparison.) Plus, if the north Caribbean Sea is already so gorgeous, why bother travelling several more airborne hours to the south?

Well, the beautiful island of Grenada is a pretty satisfying reason why adding a little extra travel time to your vacation is well worth it. The island of Grenada is gorgeously lush, mountainous terrain teeming with tropical wildflowers, while unexpected waterfalls and crystal clear lagoons abound in the tropical forests.

The overwhelming natural beauty of this picturesque island was remarked upon as early as 1672, with the arrival of the French, who named villages Beaulieu (‘Beautiful Place’), Beausejour (‘Beautiful Residency’), Belle Isle (‘Beautiful Island) and Belmont (‘Beautiful Mount’). Book a room at Mount Cinnamon Grenada to best appreciate the vistas offered by the mountainous island nation and revel in the magnificence of the world-famous Grand Anse beach.

While the nation’s French influence is reminiscent of that other luxury island to the north, St. Barts, the atmosphere of Grenada is decidedly more relaxed. Despite being popular with its wealthy, well-known clientele who return year after year, Grenada has yet to catch on with popular culture at large.

The island manages to remain just under-the-radar, even though Justin Bieber celebrated his 21st birthday in the country, which is quite the feat. The Canadian musician chose Calivigny Island as the setting for this momentous personal occasion, renting out the private 80-acre retreat. Though Calivigny is accessible via five-minute boat ride off the nation’s southern coast, the opulent oasis requires a far more significant investment in booking fees.

Similar to Dominica, people tend to mispronounce the country’s name on occasion (confusing the island with capital city in Spain). For both Grenada and Dominica, the stress is on the second-to-last syllable. Serious sailors needn’t be reminded of such basic facts, as Grenada has become a yachting capital of the Caribbean.

The island’s popularity is a result of its safe harbours; the waters provide a haven protecting boats and mega-yachts from storms year-round. Additionally, the practice of traditional Caribbean sailing is kept alive and well on the island—we recommend booking a sunset sail aboard a Caribbean Schooner with Savvy Sailing during your visit.

Alongside sailing, rum is, of course, another tradition—as well it should be in the Caribbean’s Spice Island. The rum at River Antoine Distillery is so popular amongst locals, it is never exported (of course, the 150-proof liquid would never be allowed on a plane), so we suggest visiting the source for a taste of local flavour. Afterward, dance the night away at the Dodgy Dock, as you will undoubtedly have imbibed the liquid courage necessary to do so.

4. Caribbean Travel Guide: Saint Lucia

The town of Soufriere on the island of Saint Lucia is very popular for travelers because of the breathtaking views of the Piton mountains, image by Inga Locmele

Windward Islands, Eastern Caribbean: Our next choice is the sister island of Dominica: the magnificent nation of Saint Lucia. Both Caribbean islands share a mountainous landscape (the Pitons are dramatic, overlooking the coast of Soufriere, and their pointed peaks are reminiscent of the (similarly named) Tetons in America’s Western states. However, the green hues of the lushly forested mountains resemble the Andes in nearby South America. But while Dominica, the Nature Island, promises a rustic escape, Saint Lucia is decadent luxury (and romance, but more on that later.) Both islands, however, offer the same promise of seclusion.

Just how secluded, you may ask? Well, your Saint Lucia Vacation isn’t complete without booking a stay at either Ladera Resort or Jade Mountain, both of which boast an open-air ambience in picturesque, oceanfront suites. Embrace the three-walled architectural design (and accompanying laid-back island lifestyle) in one of the utterly romantic seaside abodes offered by either hotel.

Don’t worry about the potential lack of privacy—all of the properties in Soufriere are so tucked away within the tropical environs that walls hardly seem necessary. Why would you need them when you have such an idyllic view overlooking the sea?

Sugar Beach is another elegant resort that redefines Caribbean hospitality, with its 24-hour butler service and chilled champagne just waiting to be popped open beside your private poolside cottage. Though it’s difficult to leave such enticing accommodations, you should venture outside at least once to explore the island’s varied offerings.

Travel Tips: We suggest a chocolate tasting at the historic Hotel Chocolat and hiking in the foothills of the Pitons (and perhaps higher if you’re feeling ambitious.) Of course, if you’re content to watch the sun rise and set above the Caribbean Sea from your mountainous perch amongst the tropical rainforest, we certainly wouldn’t blame you one bit.

5. Caribbean Travel Guide: Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda, Leeward Islands, Eastern Caribbean: For our final selection, we are headed to the Leeward Islands once more, to the hillside luxury that abounds throughout Antigua Island. Similar to Grenada, Antigua is also famous among yacht-owners and consummate travellers, who sail from the South of France in the summertime back to Antigua when the temperature drops. And what is it about Antigua that makes this island so impossible to resist and be part of the Caribbean travel guide?

Well, to put it in the simplest of terms, it’s a place where billionaires can go and pretend to live like dockhands, angling for a drink at Cloggy’s in English Harbour after a shift, or surfers, attempting to hang ten for sunbathers on the beach at Half Moon Bay. There’s a unique Antiguan blend of hyper-luxury and maximal laid-back island vibes that makes the island irresistible.

Travellers can book a room at the sophisticated and elegant environs of Jumby Bay or Curtain Bluff, enjoying the seclusion of their surroundings before heading to the Sunday night barbeque at Shirley Heights, where the camaraderie is evident amongst locals and visitors alike. This sense of privacy and community in Antigua is unparalleled in many other islands around the world.

Antigua and Barbuda, also known as the Twin Islands, are a picturesque oasis for beach-lovers and wellness-seeking travellers alike. The crystal-clear turquoise waters, white-sand beaches and towering palm trees at Carlisle Bay are enough to provide even the most tormented of travellers a bit of internal relief.

Travel tips: active travellers should book an excursion with Adventure Antigua for some first-class boating and snorkelling in the legendary blue waters surrounding the island.

Despite its luxury resorts and first-class hospitality, Antigua still has an old-school Caribbean vibe, it still feels quaint—and these authentic island vibes are reminiscent of what was once another secluded island getaway: Harbour Island.

Nelson’s Dockyard, a cultural heritage site located in English Harbour, in Saint Paul Parish, Antigua, image by Sean Pavone

Though Harbour Island is only 3.5 miles long, it has grown to occupy a far more substantial presence in the global imagination. This outer island of the Bahamian archipelago has become a magnet for status-conscious travellers. The formerly low-key beach shack, Sip Sip, is now immortalized in the opening scene of China Rich Girlfriend (Ken Kwan’s sequel to Crazy Rich Asians, of course.) So, visit Antigua while you still can, before it becomes swarmed by the rich and would-be famous.

Travel Tip

Are there ferries between Caribbean islands?

There were ferry services & private boat charters that connected Barbados and Guadeloupe and stopped at Saint Lucia, Dominican Republic & Martinique. Bahamas Ferries provides cars and passengers service from Nassau to destinations in Eleuthera, Exumas Andros and Abacos. Fast weekly ferry service is offered to all major islands from Nassau.

Why is the Caribbean so beautiful?

The Caribbean landscapes are light in colour because the Caribbean coast scatters sunlight. This light colour makes the sea water appear turquoise.

What is the Caribbean best known for?

This uninhabited Caribbean island in the Exuma island chain is famous for its incredible seascapes and offers some of the best diving in the world. It also boasts some of the world’s most beautiful underwater beaches, fish and dive sites. And the food, … oh the food!

How is the marine life in the Caribbean?

Have you ever dreamed of swimming with dolphins in crystal clear waters? Or, exploring a colourful coral reef teeming with fish? The Caribbean is home to some of the most beautiful marine life in the world and luxury travellers can experience it all first-hand on a Caribbean vacation. From snorkelling and scuba diving to simply marvelling at the underwater world from a glass bottom boat, there are endless ways to explore the wonders of the sea in the Caribbean. So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bathing suit and dive into an unforgettable adventure!

Can you take a trip and island hop in the Caribbean?

Some islands are accessible throughout the Caribbean region. The best way of booking the cruise is to go solo or create your own land-hopping loop if you use one of many ferry services which run between the different islands. Your search for adventure is over.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]With spring at its peak, had this been any other year, we would all be planning for our summer breaks. Many amongst us put the June – July months to good use enjoying outdoor activities, the glorious sun and the promise of lazy days ahead. A road trip best captures the freedom of summer. The hypnotic charm of the open country road, leading into new sights at every turn accompanied by our favourite tunes – the road trip has its appeal amongst all age brackets.

This however is not like any other year. This is the year of ‘the pandemic’ that has trapped the whole world in its grip. During this pandemic as everyone avoids flights, domestic and international, road trips are looking like a much safer option than international travel and a much richer alternative to staycations. Let’s add another dimension to our summer plan conundrum – hotels, hospitality zones and restaurants across the globe are probably going to be closed this June. This sadly brings our glorious road trip to a grinding stop – even before we start planning. What now?

Let’s roll the dice and head to autumn and winter. The temperatures do dip an inch as compared to summer and most coastal areas still retain their warmth and accessibility as we head towards winding up this year. Our friends down under are doing spring and summer during Aug-Dec and their continent of a country is all abound road trips.

Here are six ideas for an exceptional road trip this year.

  1. An Icelandic Road Trip

The beauty of the glacier-swept region has topped bucket lists for decades, spurring a love for a winter-kissed Nordic escape blessed with icy volcanoes and boiling geysers. As the night sky parts with a curtain of lights, explore the dazzling city of Reykjavik and discover what more Iceland has to offer. www.wtravelmagazine.com/an-icelandic-road-trip/

  1. An Andalucían road trip

With its quaint white-washed villages, traditional taverns, and a swish of flamenco – there’s something more in the air in Andalucía than the scent of citrus. Something we had to explore. Beginning our tour in Malaga, a municipality that has emerged as a must-see destination, we were greeted by a historical and culturally rich city long overshadowed by the more popular Costa del Sol hotspots. www.wtravelmagazine.com/an-andalucian-road-trip/

  1. Umbria, Italy’s gourmet treasure trove

Leave Rome its Colosseum and Paris its Eiffel Tower; let Tuscany have its Chianti wines and hordes of visitors. Where I’m going is Italy’s reclusive child, Umbria – Europe’s bona fide slow-food HQ. After collecting my Maserati from Modena, I take a leisurely road-trip through Umbria’s undulating landscape of quilted fields and steepled villages. Fiery red-stone cliffs, dramatic valleys, canyon lands that stretch as far as the eye can see: driving the American Southwest is an adventure straight off the Hollywood movie screen. The region’s distinct topography has long been the backdrop for famed movies like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Once a no-go zone, Downtown L.A. is now the most happening place in California. Regular visitor Mike MacEacheran takes a tour of the can’t-miss, new-look spectacle that is DTLA.

Los Angeles has so much mind-boggling ambition it’s hard to know where to start. The dream-like hotels, malls and stucco hilltop mansions of Beverly Hills and the Hollywood Hills? The seemingly-impossible rides and theme park attractions of Universal City? How about the lip gloss-pink Pacific-coast sunsets of Venice Beach or Santa Monica? Or consider the movie star hangouts of Los Feliz or Silver Lake?

These are all worthy places to check out during a visit to the City of Angels, but nowadays, there’s only one game in town that everyone is talking about. It’s Downtown Los Angeles, or DTLA.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In a city that loves a box office remake, DTLA has been given a Hollywood-style reboot over the past few years. From the outside, it looks like a hazy Manhattan of sun-glazed skyscrapers, housing little more than banks and insurance companies — a world apart from the L.A. of palm-lined boulevards and coupes beetling down the Sunset Strip.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]But to not delve into Downtown’s streets is to miss a trick. To wander — or Uber, this is still L.A. after all — from Pershing Square to the Fashion District, or from the Staples Center to the Arts District, is to experience somewhere resolutely local. Somewhere fresh and changing. Somewhere veg-centric and concerned with microbreweries and street art. Somewhere to be savoured, rather than rushed. You can almost hear the whumpf and feel the change on the streets yourself.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Before hitting the sights, fuel up at Bottega Louie (bottegalouie.com), an upmarket patisserie with big-picture windows on South Grand Avenue. Opened in 2009 — a lifetime ago at the pace DTLA moves — it’s a breakfast and brunch hotspot and credited with creating the area’s ‘Restaurant Row’. Order the lemon ricotta pancakes or thick-cut French toast with buttered almonds, then walk off with a tweezer-picked box of squidgy macarons. Before leaving the block completely, have a nosey at the street’s other culinary stars — Sugarfish by sushi nozawa (hand rolls and sashimi), The Counter (build-your-own gourmet burgers), Q (chef’s choice omakase). It’ll help fill out your diary for the nights to come.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]You may recognise the revivalist architecture of the Bradbury Building at Broadway and West 3rd Streets a few blocks to the north. The five-storey office tower, built in 1893 and designated a National Historic Landmark, was used to great effect in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and can be visited on a guided tour (laconservancy.org). Just as stirring nearby is Angels Flight (angelsflight.org), a toy-town-like narrow gauge funicular railway, that opened in 1901. Equally cinematic, it pops up in Oscar-winner La La Land. A ride each way is the cheapest in the city: US$1 a go.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The retro food court has been in business since 1917 — not that it shows — marrying together L.A.’s diverse, hard-to-pinpoint cuisine. You probably won’t be hungry so soon after breakfast, but grab a cold-pressed juice from Press Brothers Juicery to help look the part. Its almond milk, kale, mango and banana frozen shake will make you feel like a rock star.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Farther east into the Arts District, there is street art on apartment blocks and parking lot walls and there are industrial-chic factories that house edgy art collectives and world-class galleries. Make the trek to Hauser & Wirth (hauserwirth.com), which planted a flag for the rapidly-gentrifying area when it opened in 2016. In the same vein nearby is Art Share L.A. (artsharela.org), a community ground zero for artists-in-training who come for the gallery, ceramics studios and theatre programme. For an insightful, warts-and-all take on the vibey L.A. graffiti scene — and plenty of anecdotes about gang culture and street politics — join longtime resident and street artist Galo of L.A. The glorious interior architecture of the Bradbury Building

The glorious interior architecture of the Bradbury Building

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]It’s in the immediate surrounding streets where you can sense DTLA’s troubled past. In the 1980s and 1990s, you only walked through nearby Skid Row — with its history of police raids and homelessness — if you dared. Cardboard-boxes littered sidewalks, strangers glowered and trouble followed you around. It was always empty after dark.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The revelation to city officials, though, was that it didn’t have to be this way. In the late 1990s, new laws loosened regulations on how the area’s vacant buildings could be developed. More affordable than market-rate housing saw footloose creatives move back from across wider Los Angeles, and lofts and warehouses that were once derelict were reoccupied, housing fashion designers, architects and media creatives. Now prices for loft apartments command what you’d pay for a one-bed condo in West Hollywood, leading to the emergence of idiosyncratic neighbourhoods between the high-rises.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This turn around in DTLA is extraordinary, even by Los Angeles standards, and it’s clearly evident in the Fashion District (fashiondistrict.org), a 10-minute Uber west. To get the full effect, arrive before all the independent boutiques and designer clothes emporiums roll down their shutters for the night. As well as being home to the largest selection of textiles in the United States (around 200 stores, give or take), the 100-block area is flooded with warehouse showrooms brimming with the latest fashion-forward ideas. Helping push this fashion revolution is Santee Alley (thesanteealley.com), a somewhat chaotic, catwalk jumble of stores and flea market-style vendors, who are in business every day of the year. You’ll find it between Santee Street and Maple Avenue.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Not surprisingly, there’s plenty of great restaurants in the area. City Market South (citymarketsouth.com) is the epitome of DTLA’s ability to regenerate itself. The market dates to 1909 as the oldest farmers’ cooperative in the city, and its new tenants are breathing new life into the brick-and-mortar complex. You could join the beautiful people at Dama, a Latino restaurant and bar with tropical fruit bowl design (damafashiondistrict.com), or travel to Bologna where chef Steve Samson used to holiday with his grandparents at Rossoblu (rossoblula.com). While great Italian restaurants in Los Angeles are a dime to the dozen, at their most basic level they are meant to pay tribute to arguably the world’s greatest kitchen. And in this way Samson has gone big. Order the panzanella and pork meatballs, or pick over boards of wafer-thin salumi from the in-house butchery. The rest of it — veal chops, tortellini in brodo, duck ragu — is all very much as the Bolognese locals would like it to be.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Perhaps the biggest statement of DTLA’s intent to reshape the Los Angeles map can be found to the north. Here you’ll discover The Broad (thebroad.org), a 120,000-square-foot, US$140 million contemporary art space housing more than 2,000 works. Casual art fans tend to be instinctive creatures, bee-lining to marquee names, which makes this gallery a tricky proposition. There are multiple masterworks from Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Yayoi Kusama and Roy Lichtenstein, all taken from the private collection of philanthropist owners and Fortune 500 billionaires Eli and Edythe Broad. It’s a fabulous prospect, so give it at least half a day. North from here is Echo Park and Dodger Stadium (mlb.com/dodgers). It’s hardly high culture, but for a slice of pure, undiluted Americana close to DTLA, albeit with a side of over-priced nachos and watery Budweiser, a baseball game can’t be beat.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Undoubtedly, the message is clear. In a town that loves a box office remake, DTLA feels rejuvenated, reinvigorated and rebooted. The vanity of Los Angeles’ traditionally-popular neighbourhoods — Hollywood, Beverley Hills, Santa Monica and the rest — is that they will always be the heart and soul of Los Angeles. Not for much longer. DTLA has something to say about that.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Where to Stay

NOMAD

The spirit of the 1920s thrives in this neo-classical hotel, beautifully decked with coffered ceilings and a lavish Italian flair endowed by renowned French interior decorator Jacques Garcia. Jewel-toned damasks and marble columns prevail in the chic communal areas; the dining areas moodily lit, but the suites shine with mostly white, wood and blue, as if stepping back from too much velvet and brocade. A terra-cotta tiled pool, highlighted with a grand tiki statue, marks the busiest place in the hotel where one can lounge around with their cocktails while overlooking the nightly views of DTLA.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

RITZ CARLTON

The swanky high-rise is perched by the outskirts of DTLA, gloriously accompanied by similarly prominent landmarks—the Staples Center and the Grammy Museum, not to mention the frenetic clubs and bistros lining up the avenue. Embedded with the subtle grace of the signature Ritz-Carlton brand, rooms are tastefully refined with soft neutral colours and the grand view of L.A. from the sweeping windows. A sprawling pool is lodged on the 26th floor, surrounded with hip cabanas and blue parasols, and fitness enthusiasts are indulged with Precor equipment in its sizeable gym. There are a plethora of dining options within the hotel, but Wolfgang Puck’s WP24 steals epicurean hearts with its star-speckled interiors and distinct Asian flavours.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
