In the heart of Riviera Maya, Maroma, A Belmond Hotel has marked a new epoch in luxury wellness by establishing the brand-new Maroma Spa by Guerlain, the first of its kind in Latin America. This Mexican sanctuary celebrates Mayan culture through a harmonious blend of traditional elements and modern wellness practices.

The newly renovated spa space, designed in harmony with nature, features nine treatment rooms adorned with local design elements like geometric shapes and artisanal objects, offering direct views of the surrounding jungle. Each space within the spa is a tranquil haven, inviting guests to immerse themselves in serenity.

This unique wellness spa embodies transformative spirituality and French wellness expertise, offering a comprehensive menu of exclusive and innovative Guerlain treatments. Some of these treatments draw inspiration from the rich Mayan culture alongside a selection of rejuvenating experiences.

The Healing Remedies Workshop is a standout feature, where guests can harvest their herbs from a traditional Kaanché. They learn to create natural balms, scrubs, and more using a copper alembic in an apothecary setting that teaches guests to identify, classify, and incorporate herbs into healing therapies.

The healing rituals at Maroma Spa are inspired by the four elements of nature: fire, water, earth, and air. They intertwine ancient practices with the sacred Melipona bee, a symbol of spiritual resonance in Mayan culture. The spa offers exclusive destination-inspired treatments, such as the Purifying Cenote treatment, which soothes and nourishes the skin, inspired by the Riviera Maya’s mystical cenotes. Another highlight is The Talisman of Immunity, a holistic ritual combining the anti-ageing properties of the Black Orchid with the strength of black obsidian, a revered Mexican sacred stone.

Further enhancing the wellness journey are holistic experiences incorporating the frequency of buzzing bees and sound therapy. These therapies are designed to stimulate the brain, balance energy, and foster a connection with nature.

Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives, synonymous with sustainable and barefoot luxury, unveils a rejuvenated Overwater Bar, complemented by a tantalizing new menu from Executive Chef Hari Govinderaj. Nestled in North Malé Atoll, a mere 20 minutes by speedboat from Malé airport, this eco-resort embodies a ‘no news, no shoes’ philosophy, perfectly blending rustic eco-design with laid-back luxury.

Having been refurbished, the Overwater Bar now flaunts rustic eco-chic interiors and an extended outdoor decking area. It’s more than just a dining spot; it’s a sanctuary where guests can watch the sunset, sip on sundowners, and spot reef sharks and rays gliding through the lagoon below. As an all-day dining venue, the bar offers unparalleled views across the Indian Ocean, setting the stage for a culinary experience that is both relaxed and refined.

Chef Govinderaj’s new menu at the Overwater Bar is a delightful fusion of international flavours, traditional Maldivian dishes, and beachside classics. Among the latest additions is the ‘Gili Grandma’ curry menu, a heartwarming tribute to cherished family recipes from various Asian regions. This menu is a journey through the authentic tastes of South and East Asia, ranging from Maldivian reef fish curry to spicy Sri Lankan pumpkin curry.

Not to be missed are the Indonesian nasi goreng, locally caught reef fish sashimi and teriyaki chicken. The pizza and ‘Gili Breads’ sandwich menu are perfect for those seeking laid-back bites. Ending the meal with homemade ice cream or Gili’s famous hot chocolate lava cake is an indulgence.

“Everyone knows that grandma’s cooking is best, and we wanted to provide our guests with a refined take on the authentic South and East Asian home-style curries that grace the tables of our own chefs, and their families”, commented Chef Hari. “For the Gili Grandma menu, each chef presents their favourite family recipe from back home, which range from Chef Samiu’s Maldivian reef fish curry to a spicy Sri Lankan pumpkin curry by Sri Lanka native, Chef Isuru. Delicious!”

In addition to this revamped dining experience, the Overwater Bar also offers the ‘Seafood Under the Stars’ – a four-course tasting menu featuring freshly caught local seafood. This, along with three distinct restaurants and an underground wine cellar, ensures that Gili Lankanfushi remains a pinnacle of gastronomic excellence. Gili Lankanfushi, home to 45 luxurious overwater villas, offers a unique experience with dedicated Mr/s Friday butler service for each villa and residence. ◼

The Maldives, a destination synonymous with crystal-clear waters and overwater bungalows, offers a unique twist to its luxurious offerings with the reopening of the Nest restaurant at Niyama Private Islands resort. This Asian fine dining experience, initially conceived in 2013, has returned, nestled within the lush jungle of this idyllic island retreat.

The journey to Nest begins with a boardwalk meandering through the island’s jungle, where overgrown vines and a majestic banyan tree canopy set the stage for an extraordinary culinary adventure. Guests can dine under the banyan tree’s expansive embrace or ascend six meters up a spiral staircase to a suspended dining platform, offering a private perch amidst the treetops.

Designed as a multi-level treehouse, the Nest is connected by a labyrinth of wooden walkways and bridges amongst the trees—the thatched-roof hut centres around the showcase teppanyaki grill, where the art of cooking becomes a performance. At night, the trees shimmer with hundreds of lights, creating an enchanting ambience that blends the natural with the surreal.

The new menu features Asia’s culinary diversity, curated by Executive Chef Thierry Vergnault. Highlights include the wagyu and sea urchin tataki from Japan, the sizzling bo lok lak from Vietnam, and the chilli reef lobster from local waters, inspired by Singaporean cuisine. The set menus, including vegetarian options and the à la carte menu, offer an array of Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai, and Japanese dishes, catering to a wide range of palates.

Complementing the culinary experience is an experimental cocktail list by consultant Mathew Atkinson of Bruff Drinks. Utilizing island-grown herbs and spices, flowers, and teas, these cocktails not only tantalize the taste buds but also ignite a sense of curiosity with their innovative blends. A selection of sake further enhances the dining experience, offering something for every taste.

Nest is open daily, offering teppanyaki lunch from noon to 2:30 pm, teppanyaki dinner from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm, and à la carte dining from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm. This dining experience is a must-try for those visiting Niyama Private Islands Maldives. It is a luxury retreat spanning two islands, Play and Chill, boasting ten unique dining experiences. ◼

Bangkok’s bar scene just got a whole lot funkier with the opening of F*nkytown, a new cocktail bar that’s stirring up the city’s nightlife with its unique concept. Located on Sukhumvit 37, this old-school disco-inspired bar spans the 4th and 5th floors, complete with a rooftop alfresco area in the heart of bustling Phrom Phong.

Behind F*nkytown’s innovative approach is a team of seasoned professionals. Group Beverage Manager Pae Ketumarn leads the bar, whose award-winning career includes stints at two of the World’s 50 Best Bars – Sober Company in Shanghai and The SG Club in Tokyo. In the kitchen, Chef Theo Tomasa, formerly of The Connaught and Annabel’s in London, collaborates with Group Head Chef Luqman Hakim Hamzah, Sarnies Group, to create a menu that’s as funky as it is flavourful.

F*nkytown’s signature is its funkiness scale, ranging from 1 to 5, allowing guests to choose their drinks and meals based on their adventurousness. This scale is a creative way for patrons to explore and experience big flavours, with drink names and flavours mimicking food in a funky liquid form.

Funkytown Bangkoks Fresh Spin on Cocktail Culture

Funkytown Bangkoks Fresh Spin on Cocktail Culture

The drink menu at F*nkytown is a journey through taste and creativity. For instance, the Tokyo Banana, with a funkiness level of 2, blends miso butter, Haku vodka, banana, white cacao, lemon, and egg white. More adventurous drinkers might opt for the Caesar Salad drink, rated 4 on the funkiness scale, featuring caesar cordial, Widges ecoSpirits gin, parmigiano foam, romaine lettuce, tomato, lemon, and tonic. The Som Tum, at the top of the scale with a funkiness of 5, is a daring mix of som tum cordial (spicy), Roku gin, fish sauce caramel, honeyed wine, and dried shrimp.

F*nkytown also offers twisted takes on classic drinks, like the Cold Brew Martini with coffee kombucha, Plantation 3 Stars ecoSpirits rum, Mr. Black cold brew liqueur, and jasmine, and the Sundae Old-Fashioned, featuring red beans, Suntory Chita whiskey, kinako, black sugar, and hinoki bitters, both at a funkiness level 3.

The food menu is equally inventive, with bite-sized snacks like the Hamachi Crudo Tart, Crispy Pig’s Ears with fermented spicy durian sambal, and the savoury Bone Marrow Canele. For larger plates, the Jasmine Wagyu is a standout, featuring grain-fed Thai wagyu striploin with miso-yuzu bearnaise, sourced from N.Nuea, a local premium-grade wagyu farm.

F*nkytown’s ambience is completed with funky music playlists covering funk, soul, R&B, and 80s disco, and live DJs spinning from Thursdays to Saturdays. This new venture by the Sarnies Group is their first foray into the cocktail bar concept, and it’s already raising the question: Is this funky enough for Bangkok’s vibe?

In the southern area of Catalonia, nestled amidst the sun-drenched landscapes of the Spanish countryside, lies Penedès – a region synonymous with wine, tranquillity, and a unique philosophy of life. My first steps into Penedès were like walking into a painter’s masterpiece – in vibrant green and gold hues, dotted with vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see.

I was here for a wine-tasting escape, but little did I know I was about to embark on a journey through history, culture, and an unparalleled philosophy of living. Known as one of Catalonia’s most famous wine regions, Penedès offers an immersive experience into the world of wine, steeped in history and natural beauty.

Spain’s Penedès: A Historical Wine Haven

Dating back to the 7th century BC, Penedès’ wine-growing tradition has been honed over centuries. Today, the region is a testament to this enduring legacy, boasting 37,500 acres of grape-producing land. The vineyards, scattered across the picturesque Catalonian countryside, are dotted with quaint villages, solitary churches, and, of course, the sprawling vines that are the region’s lifeblood.

The complicated geography of coastal hills and various soil types in Penedès contribute to a diverse range of wine styles. There’s no ‘typical’ wine from Penedès; the region offers a spectrum from full-bodied red wines and the freshest white wines to excellent sparkling wines and whites. Grape varieties such as Xarel·lo, Macabeo, and Parellada are traditional to the region, but you’ll also find Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Muscat gracing the vineyards.

Penedès is perhaps best known for producing Cava, Spain’s most famous sparkling wine. Cava, which enjoys its own appellation, is primarily made in this region. The sparkling wine has become synonymous with celebration and sophistication in Spain and globally.

With over 70 wineries ranging from small, family-run operations to internationally recognized brands, the region offers a plethora of options for wine enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the best vineyards and cellar doors, indulge in wine tasting and tours, and enjoy the local produce. The passionate winemakers and the folks running these establishments add a personal touch, making each visit unique and memorable.

The Penedès Wine Route

Since 2001, the Penedès wine route has been part of the Rutas del Vino de España (Wine Routes of Spain), inviting visitors to explore the region’s viticultural richness. The route encompasses wineries under denominations of origin like DO Penedès, Corpinnat, DO Cava, and DO Penedès Espumoso. Each of these appellations represents a different aspect of Penedès’ wine heritage, showcasing the region’s versatility and quality.

A Gastro Lifestyle Intertwined with Wine in Penedès

In the sun-drenched vineyards of Penedès, the essence of the region extends beyond the vine. It’s an immersion into a lifestyle where gastronomy and viticulture intertwine seamlessly, creating a tapestry of experiences that celebrate the richness of Catalan culture.

The gastro lifestyle in Penedès is as varied and rich as its wines. Catalan cuisine, known for its bold flavours and rustic charm, is a feast for the senses. One cannot talk about Catalan food without mentioning its olive oil – golden, fragrant, and a staple in every kitchen. This liquid gold drizzled over local dishes adds a touch of Mediterranean magic.

Cheese lovers are in for a delight with the variety of Catalan cheeses. Tupi, a spicy and tangy cheese made from sheep, goat, or cow’s milk and flavoured with aniseed liquor, is a traditional favourite. It’s typically prepared in clay pots and is known for its intense flavour. Then there’s Mato de Montserrat, a fresh cheese enjoyed young, often paired with honey or jam for a sweet and creamy dessert. The Alt Urgell-Cerdanya cheese, the first to receive a D.O. designation in Catalonia, is another must-try. Made from pasteurized cow’s milk and aged for 45 days, it has a semi-soft texture and a grassy and nutty flavour profile.

The region is also famous for its embotit-cured, dried sausages that are a testament to the art of Catalan charcuterie. Each bite of these sausages, whether enjoyed alone or with a glass of local wine, tells a story of tradition and craftsmanship.

Penedès is a place where dining is an experience. Here, you can spend afternoons lounging on a terrace, a glass of wine in hand, and evenings savouring the local produce. The aromas from the marketplaces, the conversations with local winemakers, and the rural social life all contribute to the charm of this region.

To truly experience Penedès is to indulge in its gastro offerings. From the vineyards to the dining table, every flavour, aroma, and texture celebrates the land and its bounty. It’s a region where the love for food and wine creates a symphony, and each day spent here adds a note to its melody.

As my journey in Penedès came to a close, I realized this was more than a getaway; it was a deep dive into a lifestyle where wine, nature, and history coexist harmoniously. I left Penedès with bottles of exquisite wine, stories, memories, and a newfound appreciation for the art of winemaking. In Penedès, every glass tells a story, and I was fortunate to have become a part of it. Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or simply someone seeking a serene escape, Penedès promises an enriching Spanish journey that captivates both the palate and the soul. ◼
